Richard Radko Obituary

Radko, Richard C.
DELMAR - Richard Cyril Radko passed away, at home, with his family, on September 20, 2024, after a long illness. He was 78 years old. Rich was born and raised in Yonkers, the son of Cyril Radko and Mary Haraschak. He loved his hometown, and remained close with his childhood friends through his life.
Rich served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam as a proud member of the 589th Engineering Division. He attended several unit reunions and participated in gravesite memorials until he became ill.
Rich graduated from UAlbany, and enjoyed a 38-year career as a history teacher at Shenendehowa High School. He was a powerful storyteller, who will be remembered for his ability to make other cultures and eras come alive for his students.
Rich loved travel and the outdoors. He visited all 50 states, and many national parks. He hiked Half Dome in Yosemite, jogged the Golden Gate Bridge and snorkeled in Hawaii.
He is survived by his wife and favorite adventure partner, Ellen; his son, Nick; daughter-in-law, Katie Durrence; and grandson, Christopher Cyril (Kit); his brother, Gene (Zita) of Yonkers, and their children, Leah and Greg; and his favorite nephew, Gary Radko (Ginny). He also will be missed by his large extended family, with whom he spent many happy holidays and vacations. The family thanks his beloved caregiver, Morice Whitehead, the HBPC program at Stratton VA in Albany and Community Hospice for their care and support.
A committal ceremony with military honors will be held at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville, promptly at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.

Ellen, Nick and family,
Sending my heartfelt condolences to each of you.
Rich was the finest of teachers and a bright light in this world. I vividly remember his smile and enthusiasm for all that he did. His smile was never brighter than when he spoke of Nick.
My thoughts and prayers are with each of you.

Ellen,
I am so sorry for your loss. Rick was a fine man and an excellent teacher. He will be missed by many. And as you settle into your continuing relationship with Grief, listen to no advice, even the well-intentioned kind.
Your Grieving is as individual as you are and as unique as the relationship that you and Rich shared. Powerful grief is the price of great love.
Every kind wish, Sherry
