It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Richard S. Rafalko, Sr., who left us far too soon after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 72 years old.

Born December 16, 1952, in Scranton he was a 1971 graduate of Dunmore High School and recently retired after working 50 years at Scranton Regional Hospital.

Son of the late Adam P. Rafalko, Sr. and Dorothy Ruselevitch Rafalko, he was preceded in death by his brother Robert Rafalko; sister Roxanne Poplawski; and grandson Logan Michael Bennett. He was the proud father of three children: Rebecca Bennett and husband Donny; Richard Jr.; and Julie Verdekal and husband Andy. His three grandchildren-Allison, Casey, and Erik Bennett who will carry forward his warmth, wisdom, and playful spirit. He was especially loved and was proud of his two nieces, Jillian Kerecman and Holly Rafalko, who were like daughters to him.

He is survived by his siblings: Adam Rafalko Jr. and wife Christine; Pamela Rafalko; Debra Kane and husband Paul; Gail Musewicz and husband John; Patricia Copeland; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews.

A devoted husband, father, and friend, Rich-also affectionately known as "POPS"-shared 51 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Deborah. Together they built a life filled with laughter, resilience, and unconditional love. Known for his easy smile and generous heart, he found joy in the simple pleasures of life: playing pool with close friends, sharing stories and jokes around the table, and spending cherished times with his family. His two loyal dogs were never far from his side-a testament to the gentle soul he was.

The Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at 10am at St. Carlo Acutis Parish, 200 Delaware Avenue, Olyphant, Pa.

Family and friends may pay their respects from 9:00am until the time of mass at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter.

So sorry to hear about the passing of Rich. I worked at regional hospital with rich for many years. I also got to know his brother Adam. Would always go up for a cup of coffee in the morning and have a friendly conversation with rich. Rich was always happy and made the day a little better. Rich will be missed by all who knew him. My prayers and thoughts are with his family at this time. Rest in peace Rich.
