Richard (Rick) Schlimme passed away January 13, 2025 at home with his family surrounding him.

Rick was born in Detroit, Michigan on November 8, 1945. His parents were Richard and Gloria (Coutoure) Schlimme. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines during the Vietnam War. After being discharged, he returned to Detroit and pursued a career as a dental lab technician and eventually owned his own laboratory. In 1969, he married Carolyn Sue Bernfield in Monticello, IN, who survives. At retirement, they returned to Monticello after living for 36 years in Livonia, MI and another six years in Rochester, N.Y. They have two sons, William Schlimme of Lafayette, IN and Kurt Schlimme (Megan) of Coupeville, WA. Also surviving is granddaughter, Hazel Schlimme; brother-in-law, John Bernfield (Nancy) of Dawsonville, GA; sister-in-law, Anna Bernfield of Mooresville, IN; nieces, Marti Bangs and Kelly (David) Cane of Colorado Springs, CO and Cheryl Hartman of Prescott Valley AZ; seven Bernfield nieces and nephews as well as best friend John Jones of Sandusky OH.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Russell Hartman; sister-in-law, Patricia Hartman; nephew, Mike Hartman; niece, Karen Winemiller; father and mother in-law, William and Aryles Bernfield; step father-in-law, James R. Miller; brother-in-law, Timothy Bernfield and cousin Herbert Minard.

Rick loved spending time with family, riding his beloved Harley, happy hour with friends, dining on fine food, University of Michigan football, cars, dogs, horses, and traveling, particularly cruises. He thoroughly enjoyed his nightly viewing of “Jeopardy” because, as he put it, he was “full of useless knowledge”. Following his years of city life, he loved living in Monticello and his southern home, Anna Marie Island, FL.

At Rick’s request, there will be no funeral services. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are encouraged to a charity of the donor's choice.

Friends and family are encouraged to share a photo, a memory, or messages of condolence at www.springervoorhisdraper.com
