Richard ROCCA Obituary

Richard M. "Dicky" Rocca, 70, of Pittsfield, MA passed away Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at Williamstown Commons Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Pittsfield, MA on May 1, 1953, a son of the late George Rocca and Esther Leone Rocca. He attended Pittsfield Public Schools and was a 1971 graduate of Taconic High School. He also attended Berkshire Community College, receiving an Associate's Degree in Physical Education, Evangel College, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree, and finally his greatest accomplishment, a Master of Education Degree from Westfield State College.

Coach Rocca, as known to many, became a social worker, working on Jones 2 and 3 at Berkshire Medical Center and providing private therapy. He eventually began working in special education in the Pittsfield Public Schools until he was finally able to achieve his dream of becoming a Physical Education Teacher at Herberg Middle School, where he retired after over 30 years of service. His work with children was his passion. He and his former wife, Cheryl Rocca had two daughters and a son. While growing up he never missed a chance to coach their sports teams. Even after retiring, Coach Rocca would return and substitute at the Pittsfield Public Schools and work at US Taekwondo & Archery. Mr. Rocca also loved the warm weather and being outdoors. In the summers he did landscaping, rode his motorcycle and enjoyed going to the beach with his family. He was also an avid sports fan, never missing an opportunity to watch his favorite Boston teams.

He is survived by his three children, Angela Szczepaniak and her husband Jamie, Lisa Corio, and David Rocca and his wife Margaret. His three grandchildren, Celia and Joseph Szczepaniak IV and Lila Rocca. His siblings Lynda Cheda, Pamela Brodeur, David Rocca, and nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his companion Susan Koziara.

He was predeceased by his father, George, his mother, Esther and his brother, Randy.

On behalf of Mr. Rocca's family, a special thank you to all of the nursing staff at Williamstown Commons and to Hospice Care in the Berkshires for providing the care, kindness and support to our father.

Funeral Notice: A graveside service will be held Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at 12:00pm. at Pittsfield Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Dickie you helped me so much when I was in Jones 2, most people won't admit that, that is how special you are. You took 5 of us on a road trip and talked about a beefaloo. I'd never heard that before and laughed for the first time in I don't know how long! You told me as my therapist that I don't look like a Pat and you named me Trish. I have been going by that ever since. You meant a lot to me!

Dave, Linda and Pam,

I'm so sorry that you have to bear the loss of another brother. I didn't know Dickie well because of our age difference, but I liked him and remember being impressed with his motorcycle when I was a child. It seems like just yesterday we were all kids. My deepest sympathies on your loss.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

I will always remember the years you lived next door to my parents. They loved having you there. You were both very good to them. My father was very fond of Dickie.

To the Rocca family - we are saddened by your loss. Dickie was a great brother and a great friend.

Coach Rocca was a beam of light for me, and many other children, growing up.
As an adult, reflecting on middle school memories, many were made in his presence during his classes.
He was kind, patient, and ALWAYS fun.
It was an honor to be a part of his classes, and my deepest condolences go out to his family.

My family was privileged to have met Coach Rocca. He coached my son and daughter in baseball and my son in basketball though we saw him many times after. Every interaction with Dicky was a positive one and it was obvious he truly loved kids. He was a class act and he will be missed. We send our condolences to his family and friends.
