Richard Root Obituary

Richard Robert Root, 82, died on Monday, August 25, 2025. Those who knew Richard knew he was a fighter, the last of a dying breed of men who embodied integrity, strength, and resolve. Richard was a third-generation horseman and thoroughbred trainer. Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Heide Root; son, Richard Ryan Root (Dana Root); granddaughters Rene and Mia Root; and loving nephew, Thomas Root, III. At Richard's request, no memorial service will be held. In honor of Richard's love for animals, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to a thoroughbred horse rescue of your choosing or the Suwannee County Animal Shelter.

Yesterday

Richard Root was my father's younger brother. It is hard for me to believe it, but he was the last surviving guest from my mother and father's wedding in 1955. He and my father Tommy Root, Jr., along with their father Tommy Root, Sr., worked as private Thoroughbred Racehorse trainers for Harry Mangurian starting in the 1970's, and they formed an outstanding team. When my father handled Mangurian's horses in New York starting in the mid-1980's, they all came into his barn fit and ready to run thanks to Richard, who shipped them up to him from Calder in South Florida, where he was based. After he left Mangurian he continued to enjoy success, and Richard Root was a highly respected horseman for the rest of his career.
As for me, I just knew and loved him as my Uncle Richard. We became particularly close after my father passed on in 2020, speaking on the telephone every day (usually more than once), and he always gave me valuable advice on everything, which I will sorely miss!
Rest in Peace, Uncle! I pray you are swiftly re-united in Heaven with my father and everyone else you loved who went before you.
