Richard Rust, 89, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Wednesday, February 4, 2026. Private family services will be held. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids assisted the family.
Richard was born September 29, 1936, in Dumont, Iowa, the son of George and Tonnie (Muller) Rust. He graduated from high school, served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 to 1958, and later earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa. Richard was united in marriage to Joan Hilleman on June 25, 1961, in State Center, Iowa. Throughout his life, he worked as a physical education teacher, a machinist for Nissen Corp., and later as a truck driver.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Joan Rust of Cedar Rapids; his children, Wayne (Lisa) Rust of Colorado, and Teri Rust of Washington; his grandchildren, Allison, Lauren, Adam, and Abby; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Joe Rust; and his sisters, Bernese Henderson and Evelyn Schroeder.
