Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brettschneider-Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel & Crematory - Appleton on Dec. 3, 2025.
Richard Michael Schultz,
80, of Appleton passed away peacefully at home with his family at his side, on Sunday November 30th, 2025. Dick was born on February 20, 1945, in Appleton to the late Frederick and Roslyn (Dick) Schultz. He grew up across the street from Erb Park and lived his entire life in Appleton.
He attended St Therese Catholic School and graduated from Xavier High School in 1963. Dick attended UW Madison studying chemistry until 1966 when he entered the US Army to join the Vietnam Conflict. He returned to the US In 1970 and married Karen Lee Thom of Berlin. He was requested to return to duty for a short time and was honorably discharged from the Army in 1973.
Dick dedicated his career to retail, enjoying the hustle and bustle of retail life. He retired from Kohls in 2003 but never lost his love of retail. He loved Christmas and Black Friday shopping. We lost him once for hours during Black Friday at Walmart. He was found carrying around a stack of $8 vacuums. We actually still have our $8 vacuums 20 years later. He loved a good deal and was always a very generous gifter.
In retirement, he spent many years as a crossing guard at Ferber Elementary. He loved talking to the kids and parents every day, it was a great source of joy for him. He loved his family dearly and was very proud of his children and grandchildren.
Throughout his life he was a very active person, he was an avid biker and would bike miles to an event in lieu of driving. He loved the water and was an excellent swimmer and diver. He also loved the winter: a competitive speed skater and loved to go sledding. Cold weather never bothered him, and He would seek out the largest hill with the fastest slope. We considered him the Cribbage King, he was quick with math and loved cards and chess like his father did.
He is survived by his wife Karen Lee Schultz, sister Sally Zoelk of Darboy, children: Timothy Schultz of Kaukauna and Julaine (Scott) Rohloff of Appleton; grandchildren: Alyssa (Jordan) Devalk, of Kimberly, Emily Rohloff of Little Chute and Gabe (Samantha) Rohloff of Little Chute; greatgrandchildren: Eloise and Collins Devalk and Ellinora and Vivienne Rohloff; a sister in law, Barb Schultz; nieces and nephews: Brad (Katie) Zoelk, Vicky (Dave) McMorrow, Lisa Kilsdonk, Anne (Jeff) Gahr and great nieces and nephews: Joe (Chelsea) Kilsdonk, Logan Gahr, Luke Gahr, Paige Zoelk, Drew (Ally) Zoelk, Ryan McMorrow and Mitchell McMorrow and many other brothers, sisters in law, nieces and nephews in the Berlin area.
He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Roslyn Schultz, and his brother Clifford Schultz.
A Mass of Resurrection for Dick will be held at 11 AM, on Tues. Dec. 9, 2025, at St. Therese Catholic Church with Rev Ryan Starks officiating. Friends may visit the family directly at church on Tues. from 9 AM until the time of Mass. Military Honors will follow the Mass at church followed by a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, Dick wanted to establish a memorial fund for Catholic education.
The family would like to thank Rennes for their care this past month and all the work they did to get him strong enough to move home. Special thanks to Bob and Hannah for their extra care, he enjoyed them both and spoke of them often.
