Richard "Dick" Augustus Schwingel, age 97, of
Saline, Michigan, passed away on Monday, October 20, 2025,
surrounded by his loving family. Dick was born on May 22, 1928, on the family farm in Wayland, New York, to the late Augustus and Lena Schwingel.
After proudly serving in the United States Army in Europe, Dick returned home and married the love of his life, Margaret "Peggy" Wise, on September 25, 1955. Their union of almost 69 years was a source of strength and happiness throughout their lives together.
Dick is survived by his son, William (Martha) Schwingel, and his four grandchildren: Michael (Kadee) Schwingel, Anna (Brandon) Booker, Zachary Schwingel, and Elaine (Elliot) Nichols. Dick's legacy continues through his six great-grandchildren: Aaron, Noah, Peyton, Caiden, and Elijah Schwingel, and Maggie Nichols. He is also survived by his brother, Philip (Carole Ann) Schwingel, numerous nieces and nephews, and Devon Reed, the devoted caregiver who supported both Dick and Peggy for over four years. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Peggy and his sister Barbara (George) Blanchard.
After earning his degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology, Dick began a distinguished 35-year career with Eastman Kodak Company. Upon retiring early, his boundless energy and drive led him to establish his own lawn maintenance and landscaping business. After retirement and never one to sit still, Dick dedicated much of his time to community service. He drove the Red Cross Bloodmobile, volunteered for Meals on Wheels, contributed his time at Highland Hospital, and gave countless hours to the Rush United Methodist Church's PromiseLand Childcare Program and Super Sale. In addition, Dick donated countless gallons of blood over his lifetime.
Dick's love for children was evident in both his family life and his volunteer activities. He was deeply involved with his grandchildren and was known for engaging any child who crossed his path. Even at 96 years old, Dick could often be found on the floor reading to or playing with children, sharing his warmth and joy. Gardening was another passion that Dick nurtured throughout his life. He tended to gardens at his home in Rush, at the family farm in Wayland, and continued to share this love at his son's farm in
Saline, Michigan, after relocating in 2016 to be closer to family.
Dick resided at StoryPoint Saline for nearly a decade, where he became a cherished member of the community, beloved by both staff and residents for his kindness and vitality.
Friends may join the family for a time of visitation on Friday, October 24th from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bridgewater.
