Richard Sewell Obituary
Richard Lee Sewell, 79, of Fort Mill, South Carolina, passed away on May 30, 2025.
Richard was a dedicated life partner to his wife Marcia for 41 years. He loved his family and treasured his time and memories he made with his wife, his grandchildren, and stepdaughter and her family. When not with his family, he loved to spend time with his many friends locally and traveling the U.S. and abroad.
Richard loved art and beauty. As an accomplished painter himself, he loved to see other artists and he was constantly taking pictures of things he thought were beautiful which would often end up on a canvas of his own.
Richard was born on April 5, 1946 to Milton and Fanny Lee (deceased) In Newnan, Georgia. He proudly served his country in combat in the Vietnam war where his helicopter was shot down. He sustained injury and was the only survivor, crawling to safety after several days.
After returning to the U.S., Richard embarked on a career in the insurance business, eventually owning a multimillion dollar insurance supplement company. He retired from that company and spent almost 2 years traveling the country with Marcia in an RV. Always the entrepreneur, he then decided to buy two art galleries, one in Raleigh and one in Charlotte, precipitating the move to Fort Mill, South Carolina. After several years, he decided to leave retail and only paint for enjoyment and special clients on commission. He loved to help people so he moved into the field of financial planning where many of his clients became lifelong friends which he treasured until his death.
Aside from family and friends, he loved golfing, gardening, and Georgia Tech sports. He was a devoted member of the Weddington Methodist Church, where his faith and community were central to his life. One of his most significant works is the Sea of Galilee painting which he donated to the church and hangs in the narthex beside a plaque honoring him.
Richard's only son, James (Jimbo) Sewell preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Marcia, daughter-in-law Rhonda Lowery, his grandchildren, Preston and Megan Sewell and his great grandchildren Collins, Wrenley and Creed Sewell. He is survived by his stepdaughter Christine Lublin (Husband, Richard) and her two children, Ben and Brandon Mitchell and stepdaughter Stephanie Stahl. He was predeceased by his brother Howard Sewell and survived by his wife, Gayle and their son Howard Sewell Junior.(Wife, Emily).
Memorial contributions maybe made to the Humane Society of York County, South Carolina, as he loved animals and cherished his many cats, especially his current Daisy.
Richard will be remembered for his artistic spirit, generous heart, unwavering dedication to his family and friends and the beauty he brought into the lives of all who knew him.
