Richard Sheridan Obituary

Paul Richard (Dick) P. Sheridan, 88, of Skaneateles, passed on May 29. A true gentleman and a natural charmer, he was well-known in the area as the leader and banjoist for the Soda Ash Dixieland Jazz Band and played with many area bands. His wit and sense of humor were as legendary as his musical talents; he will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the hundreds of students he taught music to in the Skaneateles area for over 50 years. He also authored dozens of books on music theory and instrumental arrangements.

He is predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Elizabeth (Mowris) Sheridan, and sister, Mary (Sheridan) Devey. He is survived by two nieces, a nephew, two grandnephews and four grandnieces, for whom his memory will be a source of joy and great stories.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 10 am Friday, July 21st at St. Mary's of the Lake Church, Skaneateles. On Saturday, July 22nd, there will be gathering of family and friends to which all are welcome to stop by at the Skaneateles American Legion Post 239 from noon to 2:30 pm to celebrate Dick's wonderful life. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catholic Charities of Onondaga County at www.ccoc.us

As one of his students and fans, he introduced me to Dixieland, which led to a lifelong fascination with jazz. He was also the faculty adviser to our Dixieland band at East High, Those Magnificent Men in Their Music Machine. He was positive, patient, and very instructive. Thank you, Mr. Sheridan!

I had the pure please of being one of Dick´s students for a short time. It didn´t take but a minute to fall in love with him and his kind soul. He definitely made an imprint in my life and I will remember him with a heart full of gratitude for having met him on my life´s journey. I send heartfelt sympathy for his family.

Dick volunteered many times at the St. Ann's Church Bazaar & Barbecue in the Hamlet of Owasco. His friendly upbeat energy and ready smile will be missed by many at our Church.

To bereaved family sorry for your loss. Richard will be missed. I took care of his sister Mary years ago.

Richard was a wonder person, and will be missed. I took care of his sister and got to know him through her. I fondly remember him coming in with his banjo and playing Christmas carols for the residents to sing along with him. He was a true artist. My prayers are with you all.
