Richard Thomas Smith, Age 73, a resident of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, passed away on August 15, 2024, following a valiant battle with lung cancer, surrounded by his devoted family. The rapid progression of cancer underscored Rick's steadfast approach to life, with many recalling his unwavering commitment to every endeavor as part of a grand adventure he embraced wholeheartedly.
Born on July 12, 1951, to Thomas and Marian Smith in Klamath Falls, Oregon, Rick spent his formative years in Roseburg, a town he held dear throughout his life. His professional journey included a 20-year tenure at Roseburg Forest Products, followed by 35 years at Oregon Tractor & Equipment until his retirement due to illness.
Rick was the cherished husband of Patricia, with whom he shared his life from June, 1, 1991. A devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, Rick treasured every moment spent with his family. His profound impact on those around him is a testament to the deep void his passing has left in Douglas County and beyond. Known for his compassion, Rick was always ready to engage in meaningful conversations, uplift his community, bring joy to strangers, and inspire everyone he encountered.
In his youth, Rick found excitement in professional motorcross and showcased his musical talent as a member of a rock band. With a diverse skill set, he enjoyed hunting, country music, tending to his property, and relishing quality time with loved ones. Rick's legacy as a loving and courageous individual resonates deeply with all who had the privilege of knowing him, ensuring he will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Henry Smith and Marian Adele Smith, and his granddaughter, McKenzie Brennan. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Patricia Smith, his children and their partners, Jessie Caton (Steve), Jody Brennan, Jason Jakubos (Christie), Kevin Jakubos (Valerie), Karen Gray (Ian), and Ryne Jakubos (Tamara), as well as thirteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and his sisters Carol Daniels and Susan Searle.

I met Rick almost 30 years ago, not long after we had moved to Roseburg. We lost our stallion, and although I didn´t know Rick personally at that time, my Husband Bill had spoke fondly of him, and I was desperate to find someone to bury our stallion before my husband got home from work. Since Bill had lost his son years earlier, he had a very difficult time dealing with death, and I wanted to save him the heartache. Rick understood this. When I called him, he advised that unfortunately all of his big equipment was out at the moment but he would try to find someone. 45 minutes later there were two men and a backhoe in my driveway. Rick was one of the most kind and compassionate human beings I have ever met, as well as a man of his word. Over the years, he buried a few more horses for us, we had to force him to take payment or gift cards each time. He always stopped to say hello whenever he came in to The Home Depot where I work, and had a story or uplifting message to share. Through the loss of my husband he always seemed to know if I needed time to share a story or just a quick hug. This world was a better place with Rick here, but heaven has another amazing angel. I know he is up there swapping stories and making heaven brighter

I will always remember the times Rick and I were in the rock band, in the 1960´s.
