Richard F. Smith

1951 – 2025

Richard F. Smith, age 74, of Willistown died peacefully on August 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by parents Raymond and Margaret (née Montgomery) Smith. He is survived by his beloved wife Eileen (née Potts) Smith, loving children Mariellen (Raj Kumar), Brian, and Colleen Smith, and grandchildren Rani and Kirin Kumarsmith. He is also survived by his four siblings Raymond, Robert, Margaret, and Gary Smith.

Richard, lovingly known as "Red Dog" by lifelong friends, was born in Collingdale, PA, where he lived until he graduated from Monsignor Bonner High School in 1969. He was a member of the swim team at Bonner and remained close with many of his grade school and high school friends throughout his life. After high school, Richard went on to St. Joseph's University, where he graduated with a B.S. in Business.

Richard had a very successful career in banking, which saw him work for many different banks and had him move from Philadelphia to Baltimore, then Richmond, VA for 17 years, and finally to Raleigh, NC, where he would retire from First Citizens Bank as a Senior Vice President.

Upon retiring, Rich moved back to his roots in Philadelphia to be close to his family. In retirement, Rich loved playing golf, swimming, vacationing with the family and friends, rooting for Philly sports (go birds!), and spending time with his grandkids.

Richard was married to the love of his life, Eileen, for 48 years. They were made for each other, sharing the same sense of humor and a steadfast loyalty to their family and friends. Rich and Eileen were blessed with three wonderful kids and two amazing grandkids, along with a close family of nieces, nephews, and cousins. While the past year was tough on Rich, he was overwhelmed at the love and support that he and Eileen received from some of the most loving family and friends who were there to support them. The family is forever grateful for their compassion.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Monday, September 8, 2025 beginning at time 9am at St. Anastasia Church, 3301 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA 19073, where his Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30am. Interment will be at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery.

I am so sorry to hear about Rich´s passing. Rich was a great guy and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was a loyal friend and always made the effort to stay in touch. We met for the first time in Baltimore in the early 1980´s. Rich would also catch up with the Richmond group when he came through town. Rest in peace Rich. You will be missed!

My wife, Mary, and I are very saddened to learn about my friend Rich. I had known him over 40 years including working for him at United Virginia/Crestar Bank. We became good friends. and kept in touch throughout our careers. He had many great expressions one of which was "Get a stick and get in the game" that was very effective, and hilarious, in a sale environment. My good friend you have definitely stayed in the game! God rest your soul and God be with your family.

I met Red Dog in the first few months of college. He and a few of his friends enjoyed summers at the Jersey Shore. We C even traveled to Spain and Morocco. Taking a Hydro foil through the straits of Gibraltar. We laughed so much back then. That´s what I remember about Rich over the years. He had a great sense of humor and a. Infectious laugh. RIP dear friend

Am heartbroken to learn about Rich´s passing. Rich was certainly one of a kind, a very special man. He helped me learn the ropes when I was new at the bank in Baltimore, and in turn recommended him when the bank in Richmond was looking for a sales manager. Remember so well telling my colleagues that they´d love him, and they did! We all did. He was a wonderful, inspiring boss and a good friend. My heart goes out to his lovely wife, Eileen, and his entire family.
