Richard Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fern Creek Funeral Home - Louisville on Dec. 5, 2025.
Richard O'Neal Smith, 65, passed away December 2, 2025 in Louisville, Kentucky. He was born April 26, 1960 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, son of Loretta Smith.

He was known for his strength, determination, and unwavering sense of who he was. He spoke directly, believed firmly in what he thought was right, and lived life on his own terms. Those who knew him understood that his bluntness came from a place of honesty and love. He cared deeply, and he showed it in the way that was true to him.

He built an exceptional career as a computer engineer, working for GE corporate for over three decades. His dedication and expertise allowed him to retire early at 57, something he took great pride in. His work ethic, intelligence, and achievements were a defining part of his life.

Outside of work, he found peace at the lake. Some of his happiest moments were spent sitting on his boat, taking in the quiet and the water around him. It was a place where he relaxed, reflected, and enjoyed the life he worked so hard to build.

Above all else, he loved his family. He was a beloved son and a great dad. Becoming a grandfather was one of his greatest joys, and the time he spent with his grandchildren meant everything to him.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Connie Patterson; and Elizabeth's mother, Jennifer Smith whom he spent many years of his life with.

He is survived by his mother, Loretta Smith; daughter, Elizabeth Smith; Grandsons, Leo Smith Spalding and Owen Smith; and unborn granddaughter, Jennifer Smith.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 13, beginning at 12:00pm and continuing until the funeral service at 5pm. Burial will be private.

He will be remembered for his strength, his honesty, his dedication, and the impact he made on everyone who knew him.
