Richard Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sommerville Funeral Services - Akron on Feb. 2, 2026.
Richard "Dickie" S. Smith was born on April 26, 1952, in Ravenna, Ohio, to James and Sallie Ann Smith. He was one of seven children. Richard attended John R. Buchtel High School and later proudly served in the United States military, where he worked as a chef. Cooking was one of his great joys, and he was known for creating delicious and creative entrées for family and friends. In addition to his military service, Richard also worked in the nursing field for many years, dedicating himself to caring for others.

Richard was well known for his sharp sense of style. He loved dressing in fine suits and expensive shoes and would often ask family members with a smile, "Ain't I clean, and don't I look good?"

Richard married Wanda Lewis, and from this union one son was born, Richard Smith. Later in life, he married Lora Welfley, and from this union one son was born, Jazz Smith.
Richard raised his sons to value common sense, discipline, and pride in who they are. He maintained a well-ordered home and ensured that his children's needs were always met.

Richard enjoyed attending concerts, Fortson family gatherings, and sharing family dinners at his mother's home-moments he truly cherished.

Richard S. Smith passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at Bath Manor Special Care Centre in Akron, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Sallie Ann Smith; brothers, Samuel and Paul Smith; and sisters, Patricia Stephenson and Peggy Smith.

He leaves to cherish his memory his two sons, Richard Smith and Jazz Smith; brothers, James Henry Smith and Larry Smith; and a host of grandchildren nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, from 11:00 am until 12:00 noon at Sommerville Funeral Services, 1695 Diagonal Rd. Akron, Oh 44320. Funeral service will immediately follow.
