Richard W. Stanford, age 87, of Budd Lake, New Jersey, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at his home. He was a healthy, active man until four years ago when his health started to decline and he ultimately succumbed to end stage renal failure.
Richard was born in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, to the late Joseph and Ruth Stanford, and spent his early years in various towns in western Pennsylvania, primarily Kittanning. As a teen he attended St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Adrian, PA where he met his wife, Margaret (Peg) Stanford. They have been married since 1959.
He was a devoted member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Succasunna and also enjoyed Christian fellowship at Koinonia Family Camp in Highland, NY.
Richard dedicated much of his professional life to education, serving as Chairman of the Science Department at Jefferson Township High School in Jefferson, NJ, until his retirement. He found great joy in teaching chemistry and basic science. Even more than science, he cared about the students. He also taught at Valley Forge Military Academy and Springfield High School.
Beyond his career, Richard cherished moments spent fishing, tending to his garden, cheering for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and working on projects around his home. He also enjoyed helping others and you could often find him shoveling neighbors driveways or playing with the neighborhood kids.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret; his children, Karen Shannon and David P. Stanford (Christine) ; and his granddaughter, Kimberly Stanford (Aaron).
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 29, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Morgan Funeral Home, 31 Main St., Netcong, NJ 07857. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at 10:00AM, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 203 Eyland Ave, Succasunna, NJ 07876. Interment will be held at a later date in Pennsylvania.
