Richard Eugene "Dick" Strommer, age 89, of St. Augustine, FL, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2024, at UF Health Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine.
Born on February 4, 1935, in Rockford, IL, to parents Erwin and Clara (Valentine) Strommer, Dick grew up in Rockford and graduated from Rockford High School in 1953. He then attended the Salvation Army School for Officer Training in Chicago. His first assignment was at the Salvation Army Lakeview Corps. Afterward, Dick worked as a Department Head in the check clearing department for a local bank in Chicago. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Margaret Bluhm, through a chance encounter. Dick and Margaret married on November 11, 1967, and their bond deepened as they felt God's guiding hand in their lives.
Margaret came to the Lord in 1973, and together, they completed Salvation Army ministry training. Dick returned to full-time ministry in the Salvation Army, where he and Margaret served in various Corps assignments throughout Illinois, including Chicago, Elgin, as well as in Minnesota (Duluth, Austin) and Iowa (Cedar Rapids, Waterloo). In 2000, Dick and Margaret retired to St. Augustine, FL, where Dick continued his ministry as Sergeant Major at the St. Augustine Corps and enjoyed preaching.
Dick will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, love for his family, and dedication to his faith. He had a deep appreciation for music, being an audiophile and a musically talented individual. His love for sports was also a notable part of his life. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, devotion, and service to both his family and community.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clara and Erwin Strommer. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Margaret Rose Strommer of St. Augustine; a daughter, Rebecca Palmer (Louis) of St. Cloud, FL.; sons, John Strommer (Gail) of Royal Palm Beach, and David Strommer of Jacksonville; a sister, Phillis McGough, and a sister, Mavis Fuller, who passed away on the same day as Dick, a brother, David L. Strommer; and grandchildren, Brandon, Sydney, Ethan & Brooklyn; as well as numerous extended family members and friends.
A celebration of Dick's life will be held at 11 am on Sunday, January 5, 2024 at the Salvation Army St. Augustine, 1475 Old Dixie Avenue, St. Augustine, FL. 32084.
Dick will be deeply missed, but his legacy of faith, family, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.
St. Johns Family Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
