Richard James Subel

Richard James Subel of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, born January 1, 1947, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 30, 2025, at the age of 78 at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights. After being admitted to intensive care, Rick awoke miraculously for a short period allowing close family and friends one last chance to share their love, warmth and support: an incredible blessing. Rick was surrounded by his wife and kids, as he was received by God.
Rick was a proud alumnus of Ohio Wesleyan University, where he was an active member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity – an affiliation that had a profound impact on his life and that led to some of his closest, lifelong friendships. Rick loved celebrating his family's Slovenian heritage and eastern-Cleveland upbringing by playing the accordion at family functions and could often be found playing Christmas carols (or Polkas) at the piano during holiday gatherings. If Rick wasn't on the course playing golf, he was watching it at home, and he passed his love for the game onto his kids and grandkids. Rick also had a knack for striking up conversations with strangers and would never pass up the opportunity to discuss current events and politics. He cared deeply for his community, serving as a council member in Chagrin Falls for a number of years forming friends that soon became family.
Rick is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Sue (nee Struna), and their three children, Mark (Dara), Beth (Matt) and Matt (Steph), and seven beloved grandchildren – Helen, Elias, Ezra, Frank, Theo, Jacob and Max. Rick also leaves behind many close friends and extended family members.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 pm on Friday, June 6 at the MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 95 S. FRANKLIN ST., CHAGRIN FALLS.
