Richard Thramer Obituary

Richard James Thramer passed away in Sioux Falls, SD, on January 8, 2026. At the time of his death, Rick was surrounded by his beloved wife and devoted children.

Rick Thramer was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on August 19, 1957, to Clarence and Mildred Thramer. He is survived by his loving wife, Manon; his four children, Jerrad, Autumn, Audra, and Augusta; and his five sisters: Mary (Tim Doyle), Kathy (Philip Roath), Nancy (Dr. Joe Sinkule), Debra (Mike Gearon), and Judy (Ron Vandenberg). He is also survived by numerous close cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Mildred Thramer, and his nephew, Joey Sinkule.

He grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, where he graduated from Central High School. Rick attended the University of Nebraska–Lincoln for his undergraduate studies and earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He began practicing law in 1983 in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he was employed by various law firms. In 1992, Rick accepted a position as a public defender for Dakota County, Nebraska, and relocated to South Sioux City. In 1993, he opened his own firm, Thramer Law Office, in South Sioux City, specializing in litigation. For 32 years, Rick ran his own private law practice, reflecting his lifelong commitment to justice and to serving others. He also served as past president of the Dakota County Bar Association.

Throughout his life, Rick loved Husker football, hunting, fishing with friends and family, and playing poker. Like most lawyers, he loved to talk and share his stories with anyone willing to listen.

Rick's greatest pride and joy were his children. Whether coaching his daughters' sports teams or sharing his passion for hunting and fishing with his son, he delighted in celebrating their accomplishments and sharing in their successes.

Rick and his family spent many vacations at Lake Francis Case in Pickstown, South Dakota, over the years, and he eventually built his dream home there, retiring to enjoy the lake he loved.

A Celebration of Life honoring Rick will take place in the summer of 2026.

Richard helped countless people with legal matters. I appreciated how Rich was willing to accept court appointments for people who could not afford to hire their own lawyers. Even though Richard had a successful private law practice of his own and could have declined such cases, Rich continued to accept such appointments right up until his retirement. Richard's willingness to help others and his kind way of treating people are greatly missed in the court system in Dakota County.
