Richard Tracy Obituary

Richard F. Tracy, Jr., fondly known by his peers as "Dick Tracy", of Chesterfield Road, Hinsdale, NH died at the age of 78 on Wednesday morning, September 4, 2024 in the comfort of his home following a lengthy period of failing health.

Dick was born in Brattleboro on March 22, 1946, the son of Richard and Louisa (Gallup) Tracy. He was raised and educated in Guilford and graduated from Brattleboro Union High School with the class of 1964. Since graduation, members of the class of '64 regularly kept in communication with each other; something Dick took great value in.

A proud veteran, Dick served his nation in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War stationed in Germany prior to his honorable discharge from active service.

For over 35 years, he owned and operated H.W. Taylor's True Value Hardware on Main Street in Hinsdale. Following the sale of the store and building, he continued working as a mail currier for C&S Wholesale Grocers and in the mailroom at Main Street America Insurance Co. in Keene.

Dick also served as a Bail Commissioner for Cheshire County for over 40 years. One of his favorite part-time positions was playing Santa Claus each holiday season at various local venues.

Active civically, he served as a selectman for the town of Hinsdale and was an active member for many years for the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department. Fraternally, he was a member of the B.P.O. Elks, Brattleboro Lodge #1499, was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Swanzey, and held membership in the American Legion, Brattleboro Post 5.

An avid golfer, Dick was a member of the Brattleboro Country Club and Pine Grove Springs Country Club in Spofford. He loved attending sporting events, especially his children's, and all things outdoors (gardening, fishing, and snowmobiling).

On January 27, 2007, in Swanzey, he was married to Nancy (Lemieux) Tracy who survives.

Besides his wife of 17 years, he leaves one son, Richard Tracy, III of Charleston, SC; one daughter, Shannon Tracy-Ebbighausen, and husband Ryan Ebbighausen, of Hinsdale; a step-son, Jeffrey Rich, and fiancée Kristy, of Palmyra, ME; a granddaughter, Kamryn Rich; one niece, a nephew, several cousins and his beloved cat, Shadow.

He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Patricia Tracy Bomba O'Brien, and step-father, Albert Hall.

Graveside committal services will be conducted Wednesday, Sept. 11th at 11:30 a.m. in Christ Church Cemetery in Guilford. A celebration of life will be held immediately following the service at the B.P.O. Elks, Brattleboro Lodge #1499. Family and friends may call at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. A reception will follow the graveside services at the Elks home starting at 12:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions in Dick's name may be made to Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Dept., 13 Depot St., Hinsdale, NH 03451.
