Richard A Travers, 91, of Quincy, passed away peacefully on Saturday March 7th at the Southwood Hospice Center in Norwell, MA.

Known to family and friends as “Dick” he was born and raised in the South End of Boston. He was the son of Aderina Zaccardi Hawkes. After graduating from Boston Latin HS, Dick entered into the US Air Force and served overseas in Korea during the war. Upon his return to the US, he was stationed at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH.

It was in Ohio where he met his future wife, Linda Cramer. They were married at the chapel on the Wright Patterson AFB in June 1957. After he was honorably discharged from the Air Force for serving his country, Dick and Linda moved to South Boston. It was there that their six children were born. They moved to Quincy in 1969 and lived there until 2025.

Dick traveled all over Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa for his job with GTE Sylvania. One of the last conversations with his children was about the latest events in Iran, a country he worked in during the 1970s. When he was not working overseas, Dick, along with his cousins Bill and Jack Hocking, enjoyed watching his kids, as well as the Hocking children, play sports. He and Bill often joked that his girls were just as tough as the boys.

Dick was part of a group of parents at St. Joseph’s in Quincy that helped start the CYO basketball league. Dick was a Wollaston Legion baseball coach for several years as well. Dick was an avid golfer. He enjoyed watching the Celtic, Red Sox, Patriots and Bruins. He also enjoyed going out to eat and spending time at the casinos. Dick was also an active member of the Braintree Moose Lodge. Dick was very proud of the three generations of his family who served in both the Army and the Air Force.

Dick is survived by his son Richard and wife Noriko of Atkinson NH, son James and wife Donna of Hanson, MA, his daughter Mary Lynn of Quincy, MA, his daughter Patricia Sutterley and her husband Ken of Brandenburg, KY, and his daughter in law Victoria Travers of Hudson, NH. Dick is also survived by his sister Joan Barnes of Quincy MA, his cousins Dana Zaccardi of Delaware and Ronald Zaccardi of Stoughton, MA, his sister-in-law Carole Cramer Abney of Springfield OH, his brother-in-law James Cramer of Canton GA, and by his cousin Jack Hocking’s children, Jack, Bill, Stephen, Michael, and MaryAnn Hocking Viola. Dick was a doting “Poppy” to his six grandsons: Richard, Justin, Ryan, Jonathan, Daniel and Jacob; his four granddaughters Chantal, Erika, Rachel and Sarah Kathryn; and Dick is survived by 10 great grandchildren. Dick is also survived by treasured friends Barbara and Frank Scolaro and their large extended family.

Dick’s cherished wife Linda passed away in 2024. They were married for over 67 years. Dick was also predeceased by his oldest child Teresa, and his youngest child, Thomas, affectionately nicknamed “The Bomber”. Dick was also the grandfather of the late Robert, Andrea and Laura.
