Walker
Richard ¨Dick¨ Charles
Age 82, of Mt. Lebanon, passed away on December 6, 2024, after a three-year battle with cancer. Loving husband of the late Dee (Diane Zoe Vooletich) Walker; father of Chrissa Walker Sullivan (Lane Stoner); cherished Opa to Peyton and Zoya Sullivan; brother to (late)Joan (Britt) Poulson of Tallahassee, (late)Fritz (Ruthie) Walker of Philadelphia, Bill (Ruth) Walker of Pittsburgh, (late)Anne Creech of Toledo.
Youngest son of Charles Elwood Walker Jr. and Christine Ruoff Walker of Mt. Lebanon. Dick bled blue and gold. He was a 1960 graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School, where he was an accomplished athlete - captain of the football team and, ¨all conference end”, held an 8-straight pin record in wrestling, co-captain of the track team where he held records in the javelin(200ft) and discus(155 ft). Dick was a member of the Pittsburgh Fellowship of Christian Athletes and received the Optimist Club of Pittsburgh Outstanding Athlete award in 1960. As dedicated as he was to Mt.Lebanon, some would argue that his blood was more blue and white than blue and gold. He was a 1964 graduate of Penn State, where he played football and rugby, wrestled, and was part of the track team, where he threw the discus and javelin. Dick received the Penn State´s Football Letterman´s Club Athlete of the Year in 1964. He was also a Phi Delta Theta fraternity member and continued to serve his brothers on their scholarship fund committee as an alumnus.
After graduation, he returned to Mt. Lebanon to raise his family. His lifelong love of Mt. Lebanon is evidenced by his grandchildren being third-generation Mt. Lebonites, where his daughter and two grandchildren attended kindergarten in the same exact classroom as he did at Foster Elementary. He served for two terms on the Mt. Lebanon School Board and two terms as a Mt. Lebanon Commissioner, where he was elected President. He served on numerous other boards, too many to list.
Dick worked in the steel industry with US Steel and Mesta. His love of sports continued with tennis, platform tennis, fast-pitch softball, and handball up until the age of 76. While Dick identified himself mainly as an athlete, his daughter will remember him for his dedication to his family. Always there when her car battery died (all too often), chauffeuring Zoey when she was inconsolable on car rides as a baby, and sharing lunch daily with Peyton so she could go home for lunch in 5th grade. Dick loved two-dollar bills, Dollar Tree, Diet Dr. Pepper, and Klondikes. The family would like to deeply thank the director and medical team of Asbury Independent Living, Family Hospice, and Theresa´s Angels.
The family will hold a visitation on Sunday, December 15th, from 1 to 3 p.m. at WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE (412-563-2800) 1650 Greentree Rd., Scott Twp. 15220. www.slaterfuneral.com
