Richard Winner Obituary
Richard Winner a World War II U.S. Marine Veteran of Lock Haven was born January 23rd 1926 and was the son of Clarence and Cordie Holt Winner. Richard passed from this world January 8th 2 weeks short of his 98th birthday.
He was married to the late Velma Croak in 1949 which they shared 70 years of marriage residing most of their marriage in Croak Hollow in the house that Richard built. The past four years he spent living with his daughter Chris Adams and son-in law William Adams of Lock Haven.
Richard was a proud Marine Veteran 2nd Division 8th Regiment Baker Company in World War II from 1944 to 1946. He was a Rifle Sharpshooter in the Pacific theater of Operations. He participated in action against the enemy at Okinawa, Shima, Japan. He was also a boxer to contend with in his free time on base. Short in stature he was a force to be reckoned with once the gloves were laced up. Richard was issued an honorable service and a good conduct medal at the time of discharge in July 1946. He was a man of great faith and credits his longevity and healthy life to God.
Richard retired from Conrail Railroad as a crew dispatcher in 1986 after 36 years of service. He kept busy with numerous jobs after retirement. He was a member of Hillview Wesleyan Church for more than 60 years, and served as a Board member and trustee of Hillview for 19 years.
Always a hard worker he enjoyed life and traveling, hunting and working outdoors. A big pleasure in his life was having fun and laughing with his grandchildren. He was wonderful caregiver to his wife Velma for many years in her failing health. He was so proud to say all 8 of his grandchildren were college graduates furthering their education from various universities.
Richard and his wife Velma raised three children. They were blessed with 8 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter and 5 great-grandsons. Son Steven (Penny) Winner of East Stroudsburg PA, grandsons Wesley (Katie) Winner, great granddaughter Linnea Winner of Littletown, PA. Josh (Kristen) Winner, great grandsons Luke and Maverick Winner of Morris Plains, NJ, Daughter Chris (William) Adams of Lock Haven, grandson Nick Adams of Pittsburgh, granddaughter Heather (Glenn) Blackwell of Annville, PA and daughter Carol (John) Colucci of Lock Haven, granddaughter Jessica (Karsten) Dr. Grinderslev, great grandsons Cooper and Cade Grinderslev of Lititz, PA. John Colucci III of Austin, TX, Brooks (Nikki) Colucci great grandson Olson Colucci of Dillsburg, PA and Derek Colucci of Lock Haven.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at 2 P.M. at the Hillview Wesleyan Church, 1200 W. 4th St., Lock Haven, PA 17745. Military Honors will follow at the church.
Friends and family will be received at the church on Thursday from 1 P.M. until the time of the service. Private burial will take place at Swissdale Cemetery, Lock Haven.
