Richard C. Winters, 95, of Lincroft, New Jersey, died at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. Dick was born in Riverview Hospital, Red Bank, New Jersey, and he lived in Middletown Township his entire life. He graduated from Middletown Township High School, then called Leonardo High School, in 1946, an attended Monmouth Jr. College. Dick served in the United States Naval Reserve for four years, while engaged in operating his own excavating business. Dick was employed by Hess Brothers Inc., Contractors and Engineers of Parlin, New Jersey, for 44 years, retiring in 1996 as Executive Vice President. He immensely enjoyed his long career with Hess Brothers Inc. and the people he worked with, many of whom became lifelong friends. He could hardly wait to get to work early each morning. Dick always said that "HESS" really stood for "Holidays, Evenings, Saturdays and Sundays".
Dick was a member of the New Monmouth Baptist Church, New Monmouth, New Jersey for many years. One of his most rewarding tasks
of his life, was to have the honor of being appointed as the Chairman of the Church's Building Committee, which had the responsibility for the construction of their new all-purpose building, which was named "The Family Ministry Center". Dick also served on the Church's "Board of Trustees" for several years.
Dick's favorite spectator sport was major league baseball, and he was a diehard lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates. His greatest moment of baseball joy was when the 1960 Pirates beat the New York Yankees in that year's World Series. Bill Mazeroski hit the winning home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win it for the Pirates.
Dick loved dogs, and he and his best friend for 14 years, was a wonderful Miniature Schnauzer named "Maxie". He and Maxie were inseparable. They will now be reunited for eternity. In later years, a loveable little Maltese named "Chrissie", was his constant companion.
Dick was also a Motor Home enthusiast, loving nothing better than to travel throughout the country in his Motor Home, to enjoy air shows that feature World War II restored aircraft.
He was Past President of the Monmouth Organ Society, a member of the Experimental Aircraft Owners Association, The Warbirds of America, the Military Vehicle Preservation Association, the Military Transport Association, the American Truck Historical Association, the Historical Construction Equipment Association. the National Rifle Association, the Commemorative Air Force, the Family Motor Coach Association, the American Coach Association, and the Mercedes Benz Club of America. He was a Notary Public, in the State of New Jersey for many years. Dick served as the Chairman of his High School Reunion Committee, along with his beloved wife Ellie, who was a fellow graduate of the class of 1946. Ellie and Dick were Grammar School and High School classmates. He was also the Chairman of the "Alumni Reunion Committee", that organizes a yearly reunion of anyone who ever attended Leonard High School. Ellie was also a member of this Committee. Dick loved to get together with his friends and classmates on a regular basis. He also was an ardent history student, completing several history courses at Brookdale College, and he especially enjoyed studying all aspects of World War lI. One of his prized possessions was a fully restored 1943 Willys World War Il jeep, and he had a vast array of memorabilia pertaining to World War Il. In particular, his main interest was in the activities of the United States Army's Eighth Force, during its tour of duty in England during that conflict. He also was a music lover, especially the era of the Big Bands and the songs of Frank Sinatra.
Dick was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Dorothy (Dolly) Kite Winters, of Lincroft N.J. in 2002. He also lost his beloved second wife, Eleanor D. Winters of Lincroft, N.J. in 2017. He was also predeceased by his daughter Nancy Lynn Farr and his step-son Gary Williamson and his wife Georgette; his parents, Mrs. Elizabeth M. Winters and Mr. Carl H. Winters, both of Chapel Hill, N.J.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Dale Kerr and her husband Bob of Frisco Texas. Also surviving are his stepchildren Nancy Bard and her husband Jeff of Annapolis, Maryland, and Steve Williamson and his wife Cheryl of Levittown, Pennsylvania, and his son in-law Biff. Dick also leaves four Grandchildren, seven step Grandchildren, seven Great Grandchildren and four step Great Grandchildren. He is also survived by many close friends and family members.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 1st, at 10 am at New Monmouth Baptist Church 4 Cherry Tree Farm Rd., Middletown.
Interment will follow at Colts Neck Old Reformed Church Cemetery 139 Rt. 537, Colts Neck. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to New Monmouth Baptist Church.
