Richard Lewis Wortman, 90, of Coastal Pointe Assisted Living, Shallotte, NC, peacefully passed away in his sleep on January 21, 2025.
Richard was born July 3, 1934 in Shelby, North Carolina to Guy and Marie Wortman. After graduating from Shelby High School, Richard served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. He then attended Gardner-Webb and graduated from Clemson University with an Industrial Engineering Degree.
Richard met the love of his life, Oaka, on a blind date. They married in Greensboro, North Carolina and were married over 57 years prior to her death in March. The raised one daughter, Angela Wortman Berrier.
Richard was an active member of the First Methodist Church of Elon prior to his move to assisted living. He loved traveling after retirement and spending countless hours with their grandchildren.
Richard leaves behind daughter, Angela Wortman Berrier; son-in-law, Jeff Berrier; and three grandchildren, Taylor Berrier Franks and husband Joshua Franks, Zachariah James Berrier and Joshua Macadan (Mac) Berrier.
Richard is preceded in death by his wife, Oaka; parents, Guy and Marie Wortman; and sister, Jane Wortman Hill.
Richard will be interned at Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg, Virginia on Friday, January 31, 2025 a 1:00 PM with Pastor Gary Poff officiating. A memorial service will be held on February 1, 2025 at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church of Elon. The family will hold a visitation prior to the service at 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the First United Methodist Church of Elon (1630 Westbrook Ave Elon, NC 27244)
