Rick Engquist Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Glidden-Ediger-Wiggins Funeral Home on Aug. 26, 2025.
Rick passed away on August 20, 2025, in McPherson, Kansas. He was 70 years old. Rick was born on September 22, 1954, in Gary, Indiana, to Richard Donald "Dick" Engquist Sr. and Darlene Engquist. He grew up in California outside Los Angeles, attending Resurrection Lutheran School and graduating from Rolling Hills High School before earning his degree from Cal Poly Pomona. On November 1, 1980, Rick married Dee, the love of his life, after first winning her heart while attempting to steal her horse. The very next day, they launched Engquist Tractor Service and spent their honeymoon working together on a combine. Rick lived life on his own terms. He could never be tamed and always did things the Rick way - sometimes complex, sometimes unconventional, but always brilliant. He was a master tinkerer and problem solver, unmatched in his ability to fix stubborn machines. His collections of Jeeps, motorcycles, and Packards were more than hobbies, they were proof of his unrelenting curiosity and ingenuity, and questionable habits of hoarding. He is survived by his wife, Dee Engquist; daughter, Laura, and her husband Joe; son, Richard Donald Engquist III, "Scooter", and his wife Ari with their children Richard Donald Engquist IV and Teagan; and son, Vincent, and his wife Kylie with their daughter Rylee. He also leaves behind his best friend Penny, his loyal 11-year-old standard poodle who will deeply miss him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Washington Elementary School, where all three grandchildren attend. Rick will be remembered for his sharp mind, his restless spirit, and the way he could breathe life back into anything, whether it was an engine, a project, or a fantastic story.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning“s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft star-shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. Rick was such an interesting fellow! Enjoyed hearing tales about what he had been doing, what he had done or what he was thinking about doing. Didn't make any difference if he told me or if I heard it from his family members. What an interesting life!

Rick was a good friend of my dad's. But I had very good memories of time I got to spend with Rick from when I was very young and as I grew older. Rick was a great person and had a great personality. We always laughed when we spent time with Rick. Even when we spoke to him on the phone he would leave lasting impressions with his intellectual humor on a range of different topics. Every time any of us had an encounter or a talk with Rick there was a great story on "Rick's take" on any situation or event. He was a great family man and definitely one of our family's greatest friends. Thoughts and prayers to the Engquist family. I wish I could have been there with you all today.

Love, Hadley Hale
