Rick Oates Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McMahan's Funeral Home & Cremation Services on Feb. 22, 2025.
Rick Oates, a cherished figure in the Rutherfordton community, passed away on Feb 21, 2025 at the age of 74. Born in Rutherfordton, North Carolina, Rick grew up as a lover of nature, spending extensive time outdoors in western North Carolina with family in Mars Hill and with the Boy Scouts of America. His mother, Mary Stringfield Oates, fostered Rick's musical ability from an early age and Rick was well known for his piano skills and 'playin it pretty'.
Rick was a highly accomplished golfer from a young age, renowned for his precision and skill on the course. His dedication to golf was evident in his consistent performance and may we all aspire to one day putt like the 'big G'.
Rick attended East Carolina University and transferred to UNC Asheville, both on a golf scholarship, where he earned a degree in Sociology. Later, Rick began his own wholesale used car business with his brother, Steve Oates, which was an integral part of a vibrant car culture that was referred to then as 'little Detroit'.
Rick, better known as "the kid", was celebrated for his quick wit and arsenal of one-liners. His humor was a hallmark of his personality, often able to convert a seemingly mundane situation into something intriguing and hilarious through narrative. We celebrate the countless memories "the kid" has made for us and may he find peace in the land of endless fairways, where the soulful sounds of the Love Unlimited Orchestra is always playing at the end of a perfect putt.
A celebration of life will be at the Oates' home Saturday March 15, 2025, it will be a casual drop in from 3pm to 5pm, bring a good "kid" story to share. Please contact Lauren or Mary for details or questions. Parking is limited therefore carpooling is advised. In leiu of flowers, the family has requested that you please plant a tree in Rick's honor.
