Rip Hankins, the beautiful three-year-old German Shepherd boy of Justin Hankins and Megan Chandler of
Milroy, Indiana, unexpectedly passed over the Rainbow Bridge in the early morning hours on Friday, January 16, 2026.
Rip was born in July of 2023, and he officially became Justin's boy the following August at six weeks old.
Rip was a very loving, loyal protector. The family shared, "Rip took full responsibility for keeping people safe. He was always on guard."
The family relayed that "Rip loved to do anything that Justin did, so when it was time to eat, he waited until the very last bite, and Justin would give him the remainder of his food. He also enjoyed having milk poured over his dog food like he was eating a bowl of cereal."
Rip's favorite toy was his sloth baby, and he would make sure it was lying next to him as he fell asleep.
According to his family, "Rip loved going bye-bye! He would ride on anything with wheels, especially if Justin was driving. He followed us everywhere like a shadow, and he loved Justin unconditionally."
The family shared their favorite memories of Rip: "One time Rip stole a sleeve of crackers from Justin and brought them downstairs to the kitchen to his Aunt Bev to ask her to open the crackers." "He loved to run off and go on adventures, especially to roll in cow poo," and they jokingly relayed, "He also liked hosting parties with a disco ball and certain members of the community."
Rip loved Justin so much; they had a special bond, "The most important memory is when Justin was cold, he would tell Rip, and Rip would come sit with Justin to give warmth and comfort. He was Justin's best friend and so loyal to him."
Rip was loved beyond measure. He touched so many hearts during his short time here on earth and will be missed immensely, but his sweet spirit will remain.
In addition to his human parents, Justin Hankins and Megan Chandler, mourning his loss are his human siblings. His aunt Michelle, Aunt Beverly, and Grandma Julie, who all loved and helped care for Rip in his life. He also left behind Nolly, the love of his life; Mighty, his best buddy; his son, Biggen; and of course, all of the neighborhood kids who treated Rip like a celebrity! He was preceded in death by his son Gus, who met him on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.
