Mrs. Rita Helen Boyer Smith, 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at her home with her family by her side. Rita was born on October 13, 1945, in Winston-Salem, NC, to the late Dolly Mae Pardue and Albert Boyer.
Rita married the love of her life, Palmer “Bobby” Smith, Sr., on June 24, 1965. They built a beautiful life together and were blessed with their son, Palmer Smith, Jr. A beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Rita cherished her family above all else. She especially adored her grandchildren, Olivia and Devon Smith, who brought her so much joy.
A devoted worker and caregiver, Rita built a life defined by service and care for others. She worked for many years in Quality Control at Sara Lee, was a phlebotomist at Forsyth Medical Center, drove a truck for Salem Leasing, and proudly owned, operated, and delivered oil for A Oil Company. She also enjoyed running Bass’s Convenience Store, where her many loyal customers became cherished friends. One of her greatest joys was driving a school bus for Kerwin Baptist Christian School, caring for each child as if they were her own.
Rita filled her life with simple pleasures and activities that reflected her creativity. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting, fishing at the coast, and spent many fun evenings playing bingo at No. 8 Bingo and the Moose Lodge, where she and Bobby were members. For more than a decade, she bowled in a league at Northside Lanes, forming lasting friendships and memories.
Known for her cooking, sewing, and canning, Rita was an accomplished and enthusiastic participant in the Dixie Classic Fair contests. Her exceptional talent earned her numerous first place blue ribbons, as well as coveted Best in Show honors. Entering her creations in the fair brought her tremendous joy, and her work was admired by many.
In addition to her parents, Rita was preceded in death by her brother, Barry Satterfield; and sister, Vicky Carter.
Rita is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years, Palmer “Bobby” Smith, Sr.; her son, Palmer Smith, Jr.; her cherished grandchildren, Olivia and Devon Smith; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
