Rita Rae Windom
June 28, 1942 – February 22, 2026
Rita Rae Windom, born Rita Rae Hunt on June 28, 1942, in
Dearborn, Michigan, to Charles Raymont Hunt and Mary Holloway Hunt, passed peacefully on February 22, 2026, surrounded by those she loved. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Marylee.
Rita's life was marked by courage, steadiness, and deep love for her family and community.
She graduated from The Dalles High School in Oregon and in 1959, married the love of her life, Robert "Bob" Windom, while he was stationed at Fort Carson. After his military service, they began building their life together in Winslow, Arizona, where sons David and Evan were born. Later, they returned to The Dalles, where their daughter Debbie completed their family.
In 1967, they made
Libby, Montana their permanent home - and Libby became the place Rita poured her heart into for the next six decades.
Rita was the backbone of the family businesses. She managed the office operations of Windom Distributing, the local Coca-Cola franchise, and in 1976 she and Bob purchased the Montgomery Ward catalog store. From a desk in the backroom, she kept the books, solved problems, and quietly ensured things ran smoothly. Her competence and work ethic were constant, dependable forces behind the success of Windom Distributing and Sunshine Vending.
In 1996, she took a bold and historic step by running for Lincoln County Commissioner. She won and became the first woman to serve in that role in county government. For 12 years, she worked tirelessly for the people of Lincoln County. She helped develop walking trails that families still enjoy today, including the trail connecting J. Neils Park across the railroad trestle to the fishing pond at [Park Name].
During the difficult years of the W.R. Grace asbestos crisis and Superfund cleanup, Rita stood as a steady advocate for Libby's citizens. She fought to ensure that residents' health, property, and dignity were protected during a time of national scrutiny and uncertainty. She did not shy away from hard conversations or complicated decisions when her community needed strong leadership.
Her heart for people also led to her involvement in establishing the CARD Clinic and [Second Clinic Name], expanding local healthcare access for families who needed it.
A 28-year member of Faith Bible Church, Rita taught Sunday School, led youth camping trips to Crystal Lake, hosted sledding parties, played piano for services, and poured herself into children's Christmas programs. She volunteered at the Libby Care Center, helped found Libby Volunteer Hospice, and supported numerous community organizations.
After retiring from public office, she treasured time with Bob, her children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren.
Rita's life was marked by strength, dignity, and quiet determination. She worked with willing hands, spoke with wisdom, and stood firmly for what was right. Much of what the Libby community enjoys today - its walking trails, expanded healthcare access, and steady representation during one of its most difficult chapters - bears her fingerprints, whether widely known or not. Rita did not seek recognition, but Libby is better because she served.
"Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she smiles at the future." - Proverbs 31:25
"Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her." - Proverbs 31:28
Rita is survived by her loving husband Bob; son David and wife Brenda; son Evan; daughter Debbie; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
