Mr. Robert Lee Andrews, 89, of Bowman Highway, Elberton, husband of 65 years to Mary Elizabeth "Dipper" Rice Andrews, passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at Elbert Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Andrews was born in Royston on May 24, 1933, son of the late Fred Andrews and Clara Bell Wood Andrews. He was a stone cutter having retired after 59 years of service. A member of Deep Creek Baptist Church, Robert attended West End Baptist Church.
A cowboy at heart, he was a member and former president of the Elbert County Saddle Club where he worked tirelessly for many years. Robert trained his own horses, and won many blue ribbon awards in western pleasure competitions. He was an avid bird and deer hunter who trained many of his own bird dogs. Mr. Andrews loved being outdoors, especially riding his four-wheeler and motorcycle, or riding his tractor and bailing hay. He enjoyed CB radio, where his handle was "Hay Bailor."
Once he became blind and nearly homebound, Robert learned to dial phone numbers by counting and never missed an opportunity to call and check on his family and friends. Whenever someone would ask how he was doing, his response was always, "better than anybody!"
Above all, Robert's great accomplishment was his family. He was Dipper's love and Rita's hero, and his grandchildren's first best friend. He leaves to cherish precious memories: his wife of 65 years, Dipper; daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Martin Williams of Elberton; grandchildren and their spouses: Andy and Haley Williams of Guyton and Marti and Nathan Wiles of Elberton; great-grandchildren: Levi Wiles, Jake Wiles, Elizabeth Wiles, Audrey Williams, and Weston Robert Williams; siblings: Fay and G. F. Massey of Winterville, Reba Patenella of Rogers, AR, and Edward and Nancy Raines of Arnoldsville; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services celebrating Robert's life will be held on Saturday, July 16, at 11 o'clock in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Revs. Richard Fife and Gary Purvis officiating. Interment will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery.
The family is at the residence and will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home from 10:00-10:45a.m. prior to the service on Saturday.
Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in his memory to T.J. & Friends Foundation, PO Box 6161, Elberton, GA 30635 or to First Baptist Church of Elberton Ramp Ministry, 132 Heard Street, Elberton, GA 30635.
