It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Earl Baker. Affectionately known as “Bob”, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left us peacefully at the age of 100 years and 7 months on August 1, 2024 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Bob was born on January 1, 1924 to Sarah and Charles Baker from West Newton. Bob was known for his unwavering honesty and integrity, values he instilled in his family and carried throughout his life. He was a dedicated husband to Bea Baker and a proud father to his three sons: Wally Baker (Deborah), Robert Kent Baker (Gloria), and Mark Steven Baker. Bob cherished his role as a grandfather to three grandsons: Scott Baker, Sean Baker and Brian Baker. Bob delighted in the company of his three great-granddaughters, always ready with a story or a warm embrace. Bob’s passions included fishing, golf, contract bridge, and flying, where he found joy in the skies as a pilot. His lifelong affiliation with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and his love of auto racing were a testament to his vibrant personality and adventurous spirit. He was also deeply committed to his community, serving as a past member of the House of Representatives, where he advocated for the people he loved. A proud veteran, Bob served in the United States Air Force during World War II as a Norden Bombsight specialist on B-29s in the Pacific theatre, an experience that shaped his life and character. He was a graduate of Purdue University and Butler University, where he founded the ROTC program, inspiring countless young leaders. After a brief career at Allison Transmission, Bob founded Baker Machinery, a family business, serving customers across Indiana. Bob was an active member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, where he shared his faith and kindness with others. His legacy of love, integrity, and dedication will forever resonate in the hearts of all who knew him. The family is having a private burial ceremony at Crown Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family requests that donations be made to Care For Kids Foundation 4760 Kingsway Drive Indianapolis, IN 46205, a cause that was close to Bob's heart. Those donations will go into a Robert E. Baker STEM Fund to support improved youth testing results in the local community. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for the extraordinary life he lived and the countless lives he touched. Rest in peace, Bob.
