Robert F. Bassett, known affectionately as Bob to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025, at the age of 100, in
Bradenton, Florida. Born on September 28, 1924, in Marlborough, Massachusetts, Bob was a man of exceptional character, whose life was defined by service, family, and a multitude of interests that enriched not only his life but the lives of those around him.
Bob's journey began as the son of George and Julia Kaminski Bassett, who instilled in him the virtues of hard work and dedication. Though he would eventually outlive his parents, his beloved wife Gladys, two sisters, one brother, and many friends, the love and lessons they shared helped shape the remarkable man he became.
A decorated veteran, Bob served his country with honor as a Chief Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force for 28 years. His valor in the skies was evident as he flew on 23 bombing missions during the Korean War aboard B29 Bombers. His commitment to his nation continued as he served as an advisor during the Vietnam War. Later stationed at Avon Park Bombing Range, it was there that he met the love of his life, his wife Gladys. His service was recognized with 17 individual awards, a testament to his courage and dedication to his country.
Upon retirement from the military, Bob channeled his boundless energy into his passions and his family. He was an avid golfer, a voracious reader, an enthusiastic hunter, and a skilled woodworker. These interests were not mere pastimes; they were avenues through which Bob expressed his creativity, patience, and respect for nature and craft.
Those who knew Bob would describe him as selfless, generous, and loving. These qualities were the cornerstones of his life and were most vividly displayed in his role as a family man. He took great joy in his family, from his stepson Bill Tolson and his wife Sue, to his loving grandchildren Michael, married to Grace, and Rebecca, and to his adoring great-grandchildren Robert, William, Emma, and Gracelynn. His legacy will also live on through the cherished memories of his nieces, nephews, and the countless friends who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Bob's life was one of unwavering commitment to the things he held dear: his country, his family, and his community. His was a life well-lived, full of purpose, and marked by an enduring spirit of giving. As we say farewell to Robert F. Bassett, we celebrate a centurion of remarkable stature, whose life's story will continue to inspire generations to come. Bob's departure leaves behind a void that can never be filled, but his memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who loved him.
