Robert William Berning

Robert William Berning, age 75, of Carlisle, IA, and formerly of the Breda and Arcadia area passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at Valley View Nursing Home in Des Moines, IA.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll.
Visitation will be held Tuesday morning from 9:30 - 10:15 A.M. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Casket bearers will be his nieces and nephews: Matt Scheffler, Scott Struchen, Troy Bloyer, Jake Schwaller, Zach Sholty, Dylan Scheffler, Jake Bieret, and Morgan Sholty. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.

Robert was born on December 2, 1949 in Carroll, IA, and was the son of Norbert and Marjorie (Miller) Berning. He attended Ar-We-Va Community Schools graduating with the Class of 1968. He then attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, MO where he received his bachelor's degree. He then furthered his education at Emporia State University in Emporia, KS, where he received his master's degree. He moved to Victor, IA, and worked as the Library Director for a few years. He then moved to Carlisle, IA, where he was employed as the Library Director at the Carlisle Public Library for over 30 years until he retired. He continued to live in Carlisle until the time of his passing. He was a member of the Saint Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Carlisle and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Robert had a large collection of plants and flowers and enjoyed going to the Des Moines Botanical Garden. He enjoyed cooking, going to several Flea Markets at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, and attending his college class reunions.
Robert is survived by his brother Keith Berning of Lake View; sister Sandy Weber (Mark) of Early; nieces and nephews: Amy Scheffler (Matt) of Sac City, Cari Struchen (Scott) of Sac City, Jamie Bloyer (Troy) of Sac City, Jake Schwaller (Angie Nelson) both of Britt, Molly Vondrak (Mike) of Schaller, Cory Weber (Barb) of Lake View; great nieces and nephews: Haylee, Dylan, Zach, Morgan, Shelby, Aubrey, Kelsey, Rylan, Mallory, and Gage; other relatives and friends.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents; his paternal grandparents William and Anna Berning; and his maternal grandparents Milford and Carolyn Miller Ludwig.
