Robert Betts 79, died at 10 a.m. February 7, 2010, at Lima Memorial Health System. He was born August 12, 1930, in Lima, Ohio to Francis E. and Daisy A. Carney Betts, who preceded him in death. On November 20, 1947, he married Mary Elizabeth Young, who survives in Lima, Ohio. Mr. Betts was an Army veteran, serving from October 20, 1947, to October 30, 1949, in Korea. He was an optician and had worked at Miller Optician and at Whites-Haines. He attended Bluelick Brethren Church. He was a member of Lodge 70 Free & Accepted Masons and was a 32nd Degree member of Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus. He was a member and former president of the Lima Lions Club. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 270, American Legion Post 96 and the Opticians Association of America. Survivors include a son, Michael L. (Pam) Betts, of Lima, Ohio; a daughter, Patricia (Robert) Bennett, of Nebraska City, Nebraska; two brothers, Thomas L. Betts, of Cedar Park, Texas, and David A. Betts, of Lima, Ohio; a sister, Penny Gerdeman, of Ada, Michigan; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and a daughter-in-law, Sharon (Ron) Doseck, of Lima, Ohio. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert D. Betts; a daughter, Kathleen Betts; and a great-grandchild. Services will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. The Rev. Troy Underhill will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where a Masonic service will be held at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lima Host Lions Club.
