Robert W. Birkenhead, age 83 years, of Plymouth, died at his home on Thursday, October 3, 2024. He was the son of the late William J. and Mary (Davenport) Birkenhead, and was raised by his grandparents, Sadie and William Birkenhead. Born in Boston on December 8, 1940, he was educated at New Bedford Vocational Technical School where he was an electrical apprentice. He was in the Electrical Union with Becktell and worked at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant, and the Armstrong Ice Skating Rink in Plymouth. Most of his career was when he served as a Police Officer for the Town of Plymouth until his retirement in 1989. He enjoyed electric work and electronics, hunting, and model ship building. His greatest love was his children and two grandchildren. Bob was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, the Cold Spring Club and the Unity Club. He enjoyed many days over the years at Bunny's Pond in Carver.
He is survived by his children Janice Birkenhead Locke and her husband William of Sagamore Beach and Robert Birkenhead Jr. and his wife Joan of West Plymouth, his grandchildren Tyler and Lily Birkenhead, and his siblings Shirley O'Connell and her husband Tom of Plymouth, Barbara Giniewicz of Crossville, TN, Harold Birkenhead and his wife Charlene of Plymouth and Beverly Purnell and her husband Philip of Palm Coast, FL.
Services for Mr. Birkenhead will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at the CARTMELL-DAVIS LIFE CELEBRATION FUNERAL HOME, 373 Court St., Plymouth at 11:00AM. Visitation with his family will be held from 9:00AM – 11:00AM. Interment will be in Vine Hills Cemetery.
