Robert George Gilliland Jr., affectionately known as Bob, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025, at the age of 89, at his home in Bonne Terre, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on June 1, 1936, in Cooter, he was the beloved son of the late Robert George and Clara Lucille (Arnold) Gilliland, Sr. Bob was drafted and served his country in the Army Reserves.

Bob will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his craft as a union carpenter, a member of Local #1795 out of St. Louis for 30 plus years. His skilled hands contributed to the construction of significant landmarks, including the iconic St. Louis Arch building, the lock and dam, the MLK Bridge, the Southwestern Bell building, and the Science Center. His passion for carpentry reflected his strong work ethic and commitment to creating quality structures for his community.

A devoted member of The Parkview Freewill Baptist Church in Desloge, Bob found great joy in his faith and cherished the bonds he formed with his church family. He played an integral role in the construction of his church, demonstrating a commitment to both his spiritual beliefs and his community.

Beyond his professional life, Bob was an avid horseman who delighted in the joys of rural life. He had a particular fondness for his John Deere tractors and cherished moments spent working hard and baling hay. His love for the land and its simplicity brought him immense fulfillment.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Sandra (Maurer) Gilliland; second wife, Nedra Gilliland; sister, Bob and Betty Coale and brother in-law, L.J. Miller.

Bob is survived by his three children, George Gilliland and wife Julie, Gaylynn Eads and husband David, Gary Gilliland and wife Helen; stepson, Greg Maurer; six grandsons, Dylan Gilliland, Garan Gilliland, Chance Gilliland, Colten Gilliland (Tara), Cord Counts (Trish) and Clayton Counts; four great-grandchildren, Viviene, Scarlett, Everly and Violet; three sisters, Barbara Miller, Brenda Berghaus (Roy), and Bonita Mahurin (Butch) and brother, Bruce Gilliland (Patti); several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends also survive.

Pastor David Watkins will be officiating, assisted by Pastor Dwight Jones. A private interment will take place on a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery in Leadington. Memorials may be directed to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in honor of Bob’s memory.
