Robert Waldo “Bob” King, age 86, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, March 5, 2026, at his residence. He was known lovingly as Papaw, Pop, Dad, and Granddad, Bob lived a life marked by service, laughter, music and had a deep love for family. Bob proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps for 30 years, 3 months, and 26 days, retiring with the rank of MGYST. During his distinguished military career, he served three tours in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery. A true Marine through and through – Ooh Rah! – Bob served in many roles including helicopter mechanic, drill instructor, and data analyst, dedicating of his life to discipline, leadership, and service. After retiring from the Marine Corps, Bob continued serving through 15 years in civil service, followed by 7 years at Walmart, where he became a familiar face to many. Bob was active in his community and fellow veteran organizations. He was a proud member of the Marine Corps League, the VFW, the Veterans Council, DAV, and the Elks Lodge, continuing his lifelong commitment to supporting veterans and those around him. Bob was known for his larger-than-life personality and his gift for storytelling. He loved telling a good joke – especially if he was the one who told it – and he had a musical talent all his own, often making up songs celebrating just how awesome he was. His laughter and humor were contagious, and he truly never met a stranger. Family mean everything to Bob, he never forgot his children, and every Sunday like clockwork, he called each one to check in, making sure they were doing well, asking about their week, and reminding them how much he cared. He simply wanted to know his family was healthy, happy, and safe. In his free time, Bob enjoyed golf, where he became something of a golf fashion icon, always dressed for the occasion. Earlier in life he was an avid bowler, and after retirement he found joy in beekeeping and woodworking, creating both honey and handcrafted treasures. On any given afternoon, Bob could be found relaxing and watching his favorite Westerns starring John Wayne, often with a Dr. Pepper, a helping of collard greens, or a good glass of scotch nearby. Bob also had a generous servant’s heart. He rang the bell for The Salvation Army, volunteered with Toys for Tots, and even dressed as Santa Claus to bring joy to children during the Christmas season. In addition, he and his wife faithfully served their community through First Baptist Church’s Friends Feeding Friends program, where once each quarter they helped cook spaghetti dinners that fed 300-400 members of the community. Mr. King was born in the District of Columbia (Washington) on December 26, 1939, to the late Robert King and Bertha Scott King. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Debbie King; his son Robert (Kris); daughters, Rhonda and Patience; grandchildren, Jonathan, Travis (Sam), Amber (Andrew), Sidney (Austin), Logan (Victoria), Taylor, Spencer (Gracie) and nine additional grandchildren; great-grandchildren, Lucas, Asher, Landon, Braelyn and eleven additional great-grandchildren; along with many beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by sons, William and Keith; granddaughter, Jessica; 11 siblings. Bob will be remembered for his unwavering service to his country, his devotion to his family, his quick wit, and the smile he shared with everyone he met. His stories, songs, and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. In keeping with Bob’s private nature and humble spirit, he chose not to have a formal service or public ceremony. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor his memory may consider donating to the Surry County Toys for Tots program, a cause close to his heart, continuing his tradition of bringing joy to children during the Christmas season. The family is deeply grateful for the love, prayers, and kindness shown during this time. Semper Fi. Moodys of Mount Airy is respectfully serving the King family.
