Robert (Bob) Tilden Layton, 91, Warfordsburg PA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 28, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at the family farm where he was born, raised, and lived his entire life.

Born January 11, 1934, in Amaranth, PA, he was the son of the late Marshall and Frances (Harris) Layton. He was the husband of Helen Shaw Layton.

He was a member of Whips Cove Church all his life and served many positions including Sunday School Teacher and Treasurer for fifty years.

He was a graduate of Warfordsburg High School, Class of 1952.

He proudly served in the United States Army from February 15, 1955 to February 14, 1957 as a Radar Operator in Norfolk, VA.

He was the owner of Bob’s Atlantic service station until Interstate 70 was built. He then moved a smaller version of the station to Old 126 in Whips Cove.

He worked the family farm all his life. After serving in the Army, he worked as a toll booth operator for the PA Turnpike Commission, an equipment operator for PENNDOT and drove the first county snowblower. He retired from the USPS as a Rural Mail Carrier and then was a Brush Creek Township Supervisor for over eighteen years.

He was a member of Alderton-Dawson American Legion, Berkeley Springs, WV, a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of Moose, and a former member of the Webster B. Harrison Sons of the American Legion, Hancock, MD.

He was a founding member of The Tri-State Honor Guard and was its longest serving member, having started with the Hancock Honor Guard before the merger with Berkeley Springs.

He loved spending time with his family and often sat quietly listening to the commotion. He loved a good game of Bingo or Pictionary. His family loved when he shared stories about his life.

He enjoyed traveling and took his family on many vacations in the US and abroad. He and Helen continued traveling after the kids moved out.

He was an avid hunter and enjoyed the two weeks of deer season with family and the Whips Cove Sharp Shooters. Many memories were made, stories told, and beer drank.

In addition to his wife of sixty-five years, he is survived by his son, Alan (Al) and wife Ann, of Sykesville, MD., his daughter, Tina and husband Robert Crawford, Warfordsburg, PA.; five granddaughters, Erica and husband David Warrenfeltz, Diana and husband Darren Edwards, Michelle Golden, Sarah and husband Carl Musser, and Alana and husband Eric Birzon; four great-grandchildren, Faith Anne (Sal), Emalyn, Addison and Ryalan; sister, Betty Shives; sisters-in-law Bonnie Ward and Laura Creek; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by chosen family member, Donald Truax and his furry companion, Pooch (Abby).

The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 2, 2025, 4:00-8:00 pm, at Whips Cove Church, 5044 Moss Rd., Warfordsburg, PA. The funeral service will be held on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 11:00 am, at the church, with visitation one hour prior. Pastor Delmas Bard will officiate. Burial will follow at Jerusalem Christian Church Cemetery, 269 Church Rd., Warfordsburg PA. Military honors will be provided by Tri-State Honor Guard.
