Joseph Walton McJilton, 88, of Hancock, Maryland, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2025. Born June 15, 1937, in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of Charles W. and Rose Fields McJilton.
Joe was deeply loved throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 63 years, Joan Elizabeth McJilton, and by his parents, his sister Diane M. Adams, brother-in-law James Adams, sister-in-law Darlene J. Baugher, and niece Kristen L. Baugher.
He is survived by his sons, Charles W. McJilton of Bel Air, MD, and Darryl J. McJilton and wife Deni of Salisbury, MD. Joe was immensely proud of his five grandchildren: Alexander Joseph McJilton, Samantha Aislinn McJilton, Rebecca Irene McGee (and husband Noah), Josephine Elizabeth McJilton, and Nicholas Robert McJilton. He also cherished his two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Michelle McGee and Colt Austin McGee. Additionally, he is survived by his brother-in-law David Baugher, nieces Kristen Gardner and Michelle Koenig (and husband Michael), and nephew Scott Cochran.
Joe grew up in East Baltimore and graduated from City College High School in 1956. After high school, he proudly served in the United States Navy, receiving his honorable discharge in 1962. On April 9, 1960, Joe married Joan, and together they built a loving home while raising their two sons. He began his career with Baltimore Gas and Electric, where he worked for more than 30 years before retiring. In 1996, Joe and Joan moved to Sideling Hill to enjoy their retirement years.
Joe had a lifelong love of the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and archery and was an active member of the Maryland State Gaming Club in White Marsh and the Rosedale Loudmouth Club, where he served as president for many years. He was also a proud member of the Liberty-Pickering Lodge #219 of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Maryland.
Above all, Joe will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who worked tirelessly to support and provide for his family. His legacy of love, dedication, and integrity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Services will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 12:00p.m. at Grove-Rogowski Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, MD 21750 with one-hour prior visitation. Interment will follow at Mt.
