Reno lost a familiar face and voice this past week with the passing of Robert "Bob" William Carroll.
As a mainstay on our TV sets and radios for the better part of the last six decades, Bob built a remarkable career that he loved, making an indelible mark on the history of broadcasting in Reno. True to his style, he would often joke amongst family and friends that he simply "used to be" famous.
Bob was born on February 6, 1937, to James Wilbur and Hazel Louise Carroll in Chicago. The family later moved to Los Angeles where he lived until moving to Susanville, Calif. in 1956.
With a penchant for the media and entertainment industries, Bob quickly found himself working at the local radio station in Susanville. After getting his start in radio, Bob relocated to Reno to work as a staff announcer for a local TV station. It was there he helped start the city's first TV news department in 1961. From that point, there was no looking back.
Over the next 60 years, he was a personality for other local TV and radio stations and brought "The Music of America" to the community in the mid-90s, a show he continued to host until recent weeks. In addition to a decorated media career, Bob owned an advertising and public relations firm, and several other small businesses throughout the years.
While devoted to his career, his passion was his family. He married Marva Dee Edwards in June 1959, and they raised their five children here in Reno.
He loved his family and friends deeply and appreciated spending time with them – from Sunday night family gatherings, quiet dinners with Marva and regular lunches with his friends to going to the movies with his kids and grandchildren or taking any family member or friend (who was brave enough) up for a flight in his twin engine airplane. More than anything, he cherished telling his family funny stories or one of his million corny jokes. As a master storyteller, nothing gave him greater pleasure in life than getting a laugh or rise out of someone, especially his family.
He was preceded in death by his aforementioned parents and his children Cheryl "Sheri" Luanne Faught and Robert "Rob" William Carroll II. He is survived by his wife, Marva, and his three children: Michon Kathleen Huntley (Matt), Michelle "Shelly" Kori Millard (Scott), and Allison Kelli Erickson (Mark); as well as his 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held for Bob this Friday, June 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mountain View Mortuary located at 425 Stoker Ave. in Reno.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to do two simple things: find time to listen to the amazing sounds of the big bands, blues, ballads and Broadway; and tell a corny joke to make someone laugh.

I knew Bob Carroll. When I was a young teenager, he found out that I babysat so he asked me to watch his children. I remember they were so well behaved. I think he only had a couple then. I lived on Stoker Ave. I think Bob and family lived on Lodge? Anyway, he was a very classy and polite man that loved his family very much. P.S. He paid me well (hee-hee).

Reno has lost an icon. Bob moved to Reno and made it his own throughout the towns "hey-day" and beyond! He loved Reno
. Especially the good ol' days when Reno was a rockin' small town and everyone knew each other. I'll miss his stories, his interviews of other important Reno residents and most recently his radio show. Heartfelt condolences to his family and the woman by his side, Marva!

Wow. What a loss to Reno history. I worked for Bob at Media Consultants. He was funny, interesting and a good boss. My husband had worked on his plane. At the agency, when he wanted to disagree without disagreeing he would say: "I don´t know, that I´m not sure that you´re not right." I still use this today with friends and clients. Thanks, Bob.
