Robert T. Carroll Sr., age 83, completed his earthly journey on November 25, 2025, and began his eternal life with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Robert was born on October 23, 1942, to the late Odie B. Carroll and John S. Carroll. He was the baby brother of his two beloved sisters, Willa Mae Jones and Beatrice Williams, who preceded him in death.

Robert leaves behind a legacy of love and family. He is survived by his children, David Carroll (Paula), Robert Carroll Jr. (LaShanda), and Donna Nelson (Paul). Known to many as the General, Granddaddy, or Uncle Bobby, he leaves behind his nephews Clarence Griffin and Daryl Jones, as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

Robert T. Carroll Sr., A father with a heart of gold; he was no-nonsense, personable, funny, passionate, loving, and he loved to be loved. At the age of 3, he lost his father to a respiratory infection and was raised by his mother, aunts, and older sisters. Robert worked at an early age in various homes with his mother and sisters, cooking, running errands, and cleaning. “At the age of 23, he was hired at Allison Transmission (General Motors) in Indianapolis, during a time when discrimination was common. Robert overlooked these challenges and worked hard, remaining personable and resilient. His work ethic, determination, and dedication helped him change the hearts of many, leading to a 35-year-long career at Allison Transmission, where he was affectionately known as 'Bobcat.'"

After retirement, Robert enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, fishing, grilling, and gardening. Always a no-nonsense man, he would give you the shirt off his back if needed, but it always came with a valuable lesson. Though his advice sometimes sounded harsh, he always wanted the best for his family and friends.

Robert Sr. did not have a particular church home, but he would visit with his sister Willa Mae, daughter, and son-in-law at Phillips Temple CME Church, under the late Pastor Oliver Dewayne Walker and First Lady Dr. Helen Walker. In September 2024, during a hospital visit from the late Pastor O.D. Walker, Robert, gave his life to Christ, renewing his faith and commitment to God. From that day forward, his life changed forever, allowing him to find peace and cast away worries.

Robert kept a few scriptures by his bedside, which were his lifeline: Joel 3:10, "Let the weak say, 'I am strong'"; Isaiah 40:29, "He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless"; Philippians 4:19, "God will supply all of your needs according to His riches and glory in Christ Jesus"; and Matthew 19:26, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

His nightly readings and these scriptures provided him with peace. Robert’s

testimony touched many people who met him. His life journey helped healthcare providers navigate unfamiliar challenges, allowing them to draw from their foundational training. Everyone, including family, learned how to identify what was needed and when. The excellent care he received was all by God’s design.

One last gift he gave to his baby girl was a kiss, telling her, "I love you and thank you." The gift he received was salvation. His final message to friends and family would be don't wait to change; life is short and tomorrow is not promised. Take a moment to tell God how thankful you are for life and family. Let God know you believe His son Jesus died on the cross for your sins. Romans 10:9-10 says, "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." "For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved."

Robert’s memory will forever be in our hearts.

The Nelson and Carroll family wishes to express their gratitude to Phillips Temple CME Church, the Tuesday morning prayer line “Somebody Prayed for Me” and the Saturday morning prayer team, our healthcare providers, military service women and men, friends, neighbors, and coworkers in Arizona and Indianapolis. We also wish to thank the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Manara Mortuary, and Flanner Buchanan- Washington Park North.

A Memorial Gathering will be held on Friday, December 12, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Flanner Buchanan-Washington Park North, 2706 Kessler Blvd, West Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46228.
