Robert “Pa” Carter, 79, of Sylva, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.
A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late James and Anne (Bennett) Carter.
At 17 years old he would marry the love of his life, Wanda Jean Ashe. They would spend the next 56 years together. In his earlier years, he would sing with his wife in the Faith Trio. Rob was known for being one of the best band saw filers, of all time. He began his work at WC Hennessee, T&S Hardwoods, and various sawmills in Western North Carolina. He went on to teach saw filing at Haywood Community College. Later on, he opened his own business “Sylva Saw Works”, which would go on to file saws all over the Southeast. He would later retire, but shortly after decided it wasn’t for him. He started working again at the Jackson County, Recycling Center for another 13 years. He enjoyed spending his time riding motorcycles and feeding his wildlife. He cherished spending time with his daughter and son-in-law, grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren. He will always be remembered for his gentle spirit and great sense of humor. He has a special way of always keeping those around him laughing and smiling.
Rob was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Jean Carter. Brother Bill Carter, and sister Betty Ammons, and infant sister Birdy Carter.
Rob is survived by his daughter Melissa (Robert) Medlin; grandchildren Nathan (Amanda) Medlin, and Taylor Medlin (Ryan Moore); great grandchildren, Owen, Davis, Eli, and Layla Medlin; siblings, Sue (Larry) Lovedahl, Sarah Coggins, Roberta (Carl) Stacey, Ruth (Bob) Gregg; and dear friend, Vernon Woodard
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2023 in the Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Services with the Reverend Mark Stiles officiating.
