Robert E. "Bob" Cates

Robert E. "Bob" Cates, 81, passed away peacefully at his home in Brooklyn, Ohio surrounded by his family, on December 16, 2025.

He was born on September 20, 1944, in Anderson, Alabama to Luster and Ludie Cates.

Bob is survived by his wife, Shirley Cates (nee Brain). Together, they raised two children: Robert "Robbie" Cates and Virginia Cates Thurley (David Thurley). He was a devoted husband and father, always there to offer guidance, love, and laughter. He was a cherished papa to Rachel Cates, Taylor Thurley Huxell (Nick Huxell), Haley "Coco" Thurley (Jake Hamrick), and a proud great-papa to Abbigail Sue "Abby" Cates and Cole Allen Robert Huxell. Bob will also be remembered by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Bob was known for his strength, stubborn determined spirit, colorful language, and his always on-the-go way of life. He lived simply, worked hard, and loved his family deeply.

Bob retired after 33 years with General Motors, a career that reflected his strong work ethic and dedication.

Bob loved riding his Harley-Davidson, hunting, and spending time on his land in Marietta, Ohio, which he enjoyed doing with family and friends.

Rest in peace, you rode life's journey well. Your memory and love will live on in our hearts forever!
