Robert Chapman Obituary

Robert Edwin Chapman

May 30, 1932 - December 9, 2024

Robert Edwin Chapman, of Normal, passed away peacefully at his home on December 9, 2024. He was born on May 30, 1932, in Newcomerstown, Ohio, to Bernard and Helen Chapman.

Robert attended school in Newcomerstown before pursuing higher education in Alliance, Ohio. After graduating from college, he enlisted in the Army, serving for four years. Upon completing his service, he returned to Ohio to study medicine at Ohio State University in Columbus. After earning his MD, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he interned at Saint Joseph Hospital. It was there that he met and married Sharon Stanfill. Together, they had three children: Brett (deceased), Tracie, and Bart.

Following his medical internship, Robert joined the Navy, and he and Sharon relocated to Florida. After four years in Key West, the Chapmans moved to Topeka, Kansas, where Robert interned at the renowned Menninger Institute of Psychiatry. Upon completing his training, the family settled in Bloomington, Illinois, where Robert and Dr. Douglas Bey began their practice in Neuropsychiatry.

Dr. Chapman served on the Board of Brokaw Hospital and practiced medicine in Normal, Illinois, for 40 years. He led numerous boards, medical and community committees, and hospital working groups, all dedicated to serving the public and the medical community. Dr. Chapman became a Diplomat of the American Forensic Psychiatry Board, and his testimony as a witness was highly respected and sought after by both state and private entities. In 1993, he earned his MBA from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

In addition to his medical career, Dr. Chapman was a prolific stained glass artist, often donating his works to institutions, friends, and family.

Robert is survived by his daughter, Tracie, and son, Bart; granddaughters, Christi Chapman and Breanna Schoonover, both of Phoenix, and Lorielle Bliss of Gridley, Illinois; great-grandsons, Tyler, Asher, and Jamey; and great-granddaughter, Elle.

A celebration of life event will be held in the summer of 2025. Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or a charity of your choice.
