Obituary of Robert J. Cogliano

Robert "Bob" J. Cogliano, a beloved husband and loving father, passed away on July 24, 2025, at the age of eighty-nine. Robert was born to his parents Anthony and Marie Cogliano and grew up in West Roxbury. Robert graduated from Rosindale High School in 1954 where he was class president. After high school Bob attended Boston University and graduated in 1958 with a degree in Business Administration. Bob had a long successful career in the insurance industry. Bob met his wife Joan at a dance and in July of 1959, the two were married.

Bob was a distinguished baseball player in high school and beyond. He was a shortstop and slugger with a batting average consistently at .400 and higher. He played in the West Roxbury Park League which is a semi-pro baseball league. He caught the attention of baseball scouts and attended a training camp held by the New York Yankees. His mother diverted him to college instead, but he continued his devotion to the game by coaching his daughter Deb's softball team and being a spectator to his son's and grandchildren's baseball games.

Bob served in the United States Marine Corps during 1958 – 1961 as a First Lieutenant. He was stationed in Camp Lejeune and traveled to Okinawa, Japan. He stayed connected with the Marines in his Battalion via letters and by attending events. He loved to wear his Marine caps and had a collection. Bob was immensely proud of his military service and saluted fellow Marines wherever he went.

Joan and Bob settled in Burlington in 1966, where they raised their family. Bob loved the Brantwood Lane neighbors and had close bonds with the families. Bob and the family spent every August in Hampton Beach, NH with family. Bob and Joan traveled to California, Las Vegas, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. They enjoyed closer excursions to see Niagara Falls in NY, various parts of Canada and Washington DC. Over the years, they developed their favorite spots which included North Conway, NH, Boothbay Harbor and Ogunquit, ME. They cherished annual trips to the Orlando area to visit with their grandchildren Collin and Sean, and to Virginia to spend time with Sarah and Christopher, and shorter trips across town to see Laura and Jim participate in their activities.

Bob was an avid golfer and was in a weekly league in Lynnfield. He also loved the Boston Sports teams, especially the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots.

Bob will be remembered for his great personality and sense of humor. His love of his country and family was beyond measure.

Bob was the beloved husband of 65 years to the late Joan E. Cogliano of Burlington. He was the loving father of Cheryl Stanton and her husband Daniel of Burlington, Steven Cogliano and his wife Mary of Mechanicsville, VA, and Debra Thompson and her husband Michael of Sanford, Florida. Bob was the proud grandfather of Laura Schreiber and her husband Jonathan, James Stanton and his wife Leah, Sarah Cogliano, Christopher Cogliano, Collin Thompson and his wife Sydnie, and Sean Thompson. Bob treasured his role as a great-grandfather to Owen and Evan Schreiber and Emma Stanton. He was the brother of the late Marie Flanagan, Ruth Cogliano, Joan Cogliano and Ann Cogliano. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his visitation on Tuesday morning, July 29, from 10am to 11:30am at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St. Burlington. A Funeral Mass will be held at noon at St. Malachy's Church, 99 Bedford Street, Burlington, MA 01803. Services will conclude with a burial at Chestnut Hill Cemetery, 52 Bedford Street, Burlington.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Bob's memory to the Rotary Club of Burlington, PO Box 462, Burlington MA 01803.

Bob's family would also like to thank the care providers at BrightView Senior Living Concord River for their attentiveness and compassion while Bob was a resident.
