Robert Commons Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Veterans Funeral Care on Mar. 9, 2026.
Robert "Bob" Thomas Commons, 93, of Largo, Florida, passed away on March 2, 2026, at Suncoast Hospice Care Center in Pinellas Park.

Bob was born on January 6, 1933, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late John Commons and Bernice Kirch. Raised with a strong sense of determination and responsibility, those qualities remained with him throughout his life.

Bob proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and was honorably discharged due to an injury sustained during his service. He carried a deep pride in having served his country.

On August 6, 1971, Bob married the love of his life, Gayle Macmillan, in Gulfport, Florida. Together they shared 54 years of marriage filled with love, commitment, and family.

Bob was deeply passionate about his family and devoted much of his life to raising and caring for them. By the age of 60, he had helped raise 13 children, a role he carried with pride, humor, and unwavering dedication.

He worked many jobs throughout his life and was known as a true jack of all trades. Bob worked for Ford Motor Company and later became a tax accountant, continuing to prepare taxes for others until the remarkable age of 83. He could fix almost anything and took pride in his skills as a roofer, plumber, mechanic, and handyman. No matter the job, Bob approached it with determination and skill.

Bob also served his church faithfully as the head foreman of maintenance, always willing to step in and help wherever needed.

He loved staying busy and rarely sat still. In his free time, Bob enjoyed going out to eat, watching NASCAR races, and following the Indianapolis 500. He was also a loyal fan of the Tampa Bay Rays. Known for his great sense of humor, Bob had a way of making those around him laugh and feel at ease.

Bob is survived by his loving wife, Gayle Commons; his children Tammy Ruhlman, Kathy Spangler, Terrie Rall, Shannon Commons, and Bradley Commons; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and his brother, John Commons.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Commons; his brother, Ronald Commons; and his sister, Carolyn Stevens.

Bob will be remembered as a strong willed man, a devoted husband and father, a proud veteran, and someone who could do just about anything he set his mind to. His love for his family, his humor, and his hardworking spirit will live on through all who knew him.
