Robert Marquis "Mark" Durst, 72, of Oakland died on Sunday, April 2, 2023 at Garrett Regional Medical Center. Born on October 14, 1950, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late John O. and Ruth (Marquis) Durst.
Mark graduated from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in 1972. Upon graduation, he ran the family funeral home for 34 years. Being active in his community, he served on the Garrett Memorial Hospital Board of Governors, served on the Board of Directors for Hospice of Garrett County, served on the board of the Oakland Chamber of Commerce, on which he was President for one year, and served a term on the Oakland City Council. Mark was a member of the Oakland Masonic Lodge and was a thirty-year member of the Oakland Elks Lodge #2481. One of Mark's greatest passions was the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as a firefighter, President and Vice-President and was nominated Garrett County Fireman of the Year in 1987. Mark has been a vital part of his community in many capacities, not to mention the countless acts of kindness shown to the families who patronized the Durst Funeral Home. A quote that best describes Mark's life work is, "It is a rare person who can take care of business while taking care of hearts."
Mark is survived by his wife, Shirley (Moreland) Durst; his children, Ryan Durst and wife Elizabeth, Erika Young and husband Rip, and Adam Durst and friend Robin Sisler; grandchildren, Andrew, Alex, Ty, Major, Clara, William, Caroline, and George; a great grandson, Jaxson; step-children, Cathy O'Neill and husband Scott, Amy Thrasher and husband Chris, and Larry Bernard; step-grandchildren, Amber, Nick, Emily, Megan, Ben, Lawson, Ashlinn, Ava, and Myla; a brother, John Durst and wife Lynda; and a number of nieces and nephews.
