HOLDEN – Robert E. Evans of Holden, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and mentor to so many, passed on Thursday, January 20, 2022.
Born in Oak Park, Illinois and raised in Needham, MA Bob was the son of Leland E. and Alice (Littleton) Evans and lived the last 54 years in Holden.
Bob was a graduate of Needham High School, class of 1958. He attended Illinois Wesleyan University where he received a bachelor's degree in insurance. While attending high school in Needham, Bob met the love of his life and devoted wife, Kathy.
Bob had a life-long career, spanning nearly 60 years, as an accomplished investment advisor, a licensed insurance agent and a financial planner. Starting at John Hancock Insurance Company, he then worked as a General Agent with Berkshire Life Insurance Company for 32-years. In 1989 he founded FMG Financial Services in partnership with Michael Hanely. Bob has always been dedicated to his career and worked to improve the industry through his membership and active involvement with various organizations, including serving as President of the Massachusetts Association of Life Underwriters. Bob's awards and accomplishments are too numerous to list, but he was most proud of receiving the John Mehan Award, one of the most prestigious in his industry.
When asked what he's enjoyed most about his career, Bob would say "the people." Bob has developed life-long friendships with many of his clients and they have relied on him for his sound guidance. Bob also loved mentoring young people. He taught insurance classes for 20 years, volunteered in the Dynamy program and served on the board of Trustees of his alma mater. Bob was an advocate for his community serving in Holden on the Planning Board, Economic Development Commission, the Wachusett Area Chamber of Commerce and as past President of the Jaycees. A longtime board member and past president of the Briarwood Retirement Community, Bob's kindness and empathy showed he always put others first.
Bob was an avid antique car enthusiast from the time he was child. Before obtaining his drivers' license, Bob became the youngest member of the Veteran Motor Car Club of America and enjoyed membership in numerous automobile clubs thereafter. Bob shared his passion with his son, Steve, and attended many events across the country. One highlight was being selected to show his 1909 Pierce Arrow at the famous Pebble Beach Concours. Through the passion for his hobby, Bob made many lifelong friends.
It goes without saying that Bob's family meant the world to him, especially his wife, Kathy. Married for nearly 60 years, Bob and Kathy had the good fortune to travel with dear friends to many destinations in Europe. Members of Tatnuck Country Club, Bob and Kathy often dined with friends and celebrated with family. Our family will also remember fondly many wonderful vacations and the special relationship "Grandpa" had with each of his 5 grandchildren.
He will remain in our hearts and be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife, Kathleen (Knuth) Evans; his daughter, Amy L. Weinstein and her husband, David of Riverside, RI; his son, Steven P. Evans and his wife, Barbara of Anthem, AZ and his son, Matthew B. Evans and his wife, Christine of Yonkers, NY; and his five grandchildren, Evan and Hannah Weinstein; Nathan, Anna and Finnian Evans; his brother, Richard L. Evans and his wife, Myrna of Concord, NH; his Aunt Doris Jean Evans of Santa Rosa, CA and nephews and nieces. Our family extends our gratitude to the dedicated caregivers at Jewish Home Hospice.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Bob's family from 4 to 7 pm on Thursday, January 27, at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A funeral service honoring and celebrating his life will be held at 11 am on Friday, January 28, the First Baptist Church of Worcester, 111 Park Ave., Worcester. Out of an abundance of caution and concern, facial masks will be required. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob's honor can be made to the Residents Assistance Fund at the Briarwood Retirement Community, 65 Briarwood Circle, Worcester, MA 01606.

I was over at Briarwood today and learned of Bob's passing. What a great guy! Whenever I mention his name people have nice things to say about Bob. I had a client relationship with him, but it quickly moved to friendship. His passing leaves a hole for all that knew him. I always think of him when driving down Park Avenue. My sympathy. David

I just learned of Bob's passing from a colleague this past weekend at an antique toy car show. I met Bob in the mid-1990s when he became a subscriber to my Promo Car Collector newsmagazine. Bob and I shared many of the same interests but mostly in promotional cars made by National Products and Banthrico. We bought and sold cars to each other and always had a ball. Some of the finest and most cherished cars in my collection came to me from Bob when he began downsizing.

After I moved to Arizona we'd get together more frequently and have lunch somewhere between Mesa and Anthem, always bringing new finds to show one another.

I'm still in denial mode. Bob was always smiling and energetic, a picture of perfect health, so I assumed he would live a long, happy life, at least until he reached the century mark.

So long, dearest of friends. If there are any Banthricos there, save me a few and we'll pick up where we left off when I arrive.

Our sincere condolences to the family. Bob was a true gentlemen and a significant influence in the collector car community. I know showing his wonderful vehicles at the Arizona and Pebble beach Concours brought he and his family great joy. His memory and accomplishments will live on forever in the old car hobby. God Bless.

I met Bob through my wife's family many years ago. Susan remembers Bob as the "tall" young man coming to her house working with her parents on a retirement plan and insurance. He was very much liked and respected for his kindness and his sound guidance. When it was time for my small company to expand, I naturally turned to Bob. His congenial nature, friendliness and sound advice will be greatly missed. I am deeply sorry for the loss to his family and his friends at FMG. He was truly a very good man.

Kathy: Such sad news to hear of Bob's passing. I can remember sitting in his office nearly a lifetime ago for me, as we planned the road to retirement. Me, being nervous as to doing the right thing, Bob reassuring us the plan he layed out was the right one. Thus began a 40+ year relationship. For that and so much more, I am thankful for having Bob in our life.

Bob, may you rest in peace.

I met Bob and Kathy, many years ago, through my work at Illinois Wesleyan University, which was their alma mater. We worked together on their 50 year class reunion..
My husband and I enjoyed many dinners, and laughs, with them when they traveled to Arizona to their home in Anthem.. They became family to us.
Bob enjoyed his work, so much, that he often said, to me, "Why would I retire, Celeste?" His customers were so blessed for his loyalty and passion.
Kathy and Bob always put family first, and their love for one another was everlasting.
If Bob and Kathy happened to be your friends, you were very fortunate!
RIP, One in A Million, Bob! You will be sorely missed.....

Simply one of the nicest professionals I have ever met and a proud graduate of the insurance school at IWU. He defined what a classy person did and strived to do and was a model to us all of what we all strive to be.

We send our love and deepest sympathy to Kathy and the entire Evans family. Bob was one-of-a-kind. I was blessed to know him through Briarwood. He was smart, dedicated, and kind. Some people float through life. Bob was not one of those people. He made a lasting impact and left a meaningful legacy. May he rest in peace.
