Robert Evans Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Mathis Funeral Home - Cochran on Dec. 14, 2025.
Cochran - Robert P. Evans, age 83, passed away Friday, December 12, 2025, in the Dodge County Hospital with his family by his side. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Mathis Funeral Home. The family will greet friends after the service Tuesday at Mathis Funeral Home. Burial will be in Powers Cemetery in the Evans Family plot.

Robert was born October 9, 1942, son of Charles William Evans and Pauline Sanders Evans of Bleckley County. He grew up on a farm and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his two elder brothers. He graduated from Cochran High School in 1960. He continued his education at Middle Georgia College, and Georgia Southern College. He later returned to Georgia Southern College, where he received his master's in education. On September 27, 1969, Robert married Amelia Dennis Evans, also a teacher. Robert enjoyed travel and adventure, including two trips to Costa Rica, reading, gardening and yard maintenance, including working with his trees and azaleas, and his many cats and dogs over the years.

Robert was a beloved educator, husband, father, and uncle. His legacy will live on in the many students' lives he influenced and the family that he treasured. His mentorship, integrity, compassion, and quiet strength was rooted in his deep love and commitment to his family and his community. Robert lived a life of quiet conviction and purpose, believing deeply in the power and importance of education and how it can transform lives. For nearly 40 years, Robert dedicated himself to the students of the Bleckley County School System, shaping minds, encouraging growth, and opening doors of opportunity for countless young students. Generations of students have been influenced by him – lessons learned, confidence gained, and paths forever changed. After he retired, Robert felt the call to continue teaching, and so he chose to continue teaching in a correctional facility, helping more than 250 individuals earn their GEDs over his 12 years there. He was awarded Teacher of the Year for his exceptional work. To Robert, education was not just about textbooks or tests; it was about second chances, hope, and restoring a sense of worth and an opportunity for a new and better life. Robert truly made an impact on the world through his unwavering belief in the good that education can bring.

Robert is predeceased by his mother and father and his two older brothers, Charles Tillman Evans and John Russell Evans and his beloved cousin, Rev. Clyde Evans.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Amelia Dennis Evans, their daughter, Leslie Michele Evans, many nieces, nephews and friends.
