Obituary of Ruth Elizabeth Evans
Ruth Elizabeth Evans (née Hendershot), 88
Ruth Elizabeth Evans, lovingly known to her family and friends as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and caregiver, passed away peacefully at her home on December 12, 2025, at the age of 88.
Ruth was born in 1937 in Flagtown, New Jersey, and was the youngest of sixteen children born to the late Benjamin and Beulah Hendershot. Growing up in a large family helped shape the deep sense of responsibility, love, and care for others that defined her life.
She was married to her husband, the late Donald J. Evans, Sr., and together they raised five children. Ruth's greatest joy was her family, and she dedicated herself wholeheartedly to her role as a homemaker, ensuring her home was always welcoming, orderly, and filled with love. Once her children were grown, she began a new chapter of service outside the home.
Ruth worked for many years at the former Hunterdon State School, now known as the Hunterdon Developmental Center, where she served as a direct care provider. Through decades of compassionate service, she touched countless lives and retired after a long and meaningful career caring for others.
Always on the move, Ruth never wasted a moment. She was known for her spotless home, her tireless work ethic, and her dependable nature. Family members fondly remember that she was always ready to lend a helping hand or offer wise and thoughtful guidance.
Ruth had many interests that brought her joy. She was a devoted fan of Trace Atkins and Elvis Presley and proudly maintained an extensive collection of memorabilia. She also collected Native American artifacts, ranging from arrowheads to textiles, and had a deep appreciation for their history and craftsmanship. A lover of country music, she especially enjoyed watching the Hallmark Channel, particularly during the Christmas season.
Ruth is survived by her sons, Donald Evans, Jr., and Jeffrey Evans and his partner Kathryn Mines; her great-niece, Virginia Beagle; and her grandchildren, Jeffrey Evans, Jr., Sara Evans, Preston Evans, Donald Evans III, David Evans, Jr., Brandon Evans, Amanda Evans, Heather Evans, and Joseph Evans. She also leaves behind a large and loving extended family.
She was predeceased by her parents, Benjamin and Beulah Hendershot; her sons, David James Evans and Rodney D. Evans; and her daughter, Christine McPherson.
Family and friends are invited to attend visitation on Saturday, December 20, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Knoll-DeVoe Funeral Home and Cremation Service, located at 142 West Washington Avenue, Washington, NJ 07882. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home at 2:00 p.m. to honor Ruth's life. Cremation will be held privately following the service.
